The Album Atlas Feedback Page

Fraser Lewry's picture

Album AtlasSpotted a mistake with the Album Atlas? Want to let us know that Robbie Robertson's Storyville sleeve wasn't actually shot in Storyville, but several blocks to the east? Confused as the real location of the mound pictured on the front of Julian Cope's Fried?

This is the place to let us know.

1

Willie and the Poor Boys location

I hesitate to argue with David but the SF Chronicle and others online have the Duck Kee Store at 32nd and Peralta in Oakland.

Street level on Google is no help, the buildings all appear to have changed.

Why do I find myself thinking that picture wasn't actually taken in the States? I'm sure I read somewhere that it was taken in somewhere like Holland?

It was Australia. Why do I think that?

0
Lucas Hare | 22 July 2008 - 7:42pm

It was Australia. A field

It was Australia. A field not far outside of Melbourne Victoria in fact. The story goes that Cash was in town for a day and wanted a promo photo, so he and the photographer got in the car and went for a ride for the shoot. The dogs are apparently the photographer's.

Not sure of the exact location though. I remember reading it on the web a while back, but Google isn't helping.

Late Night Final - Richard Hawley

The photo on the cover was taken in Castle Markets, whereas the marker on the atlas is showing Charter Square. I think the correct postcode is S1 2AH (Exchange Street/Castlegate).

0
Mr Sparks | 9 July 2008 - 12:41pm

Thanks for that

I've corrected it. This was one of those cases where the entry ran foul of the fact that the Post Office have "hobbled" Google maps in order to protect their copyright in the postal codes. On more than one occasion recently I have looked up a postal code on Google maps and ended up going to an address which is about a quarter of a mile away from the real one. We live and learn.

May I apologise

for the utter cack I wrote for Seth Lakeman's Poor Man's Heaven? I can possibly blame my cross-lateralism for getting left and right mixed up, but definitely not for the use of the word 'outcrop' when I actually meant 'islet'.

Where I wrote

"The shot looks south west, with the blurry outcrop visible on the left side of the album cover."

can I ask it be changed to something along the lines of:

"The shot looks south west, the rocky islet visible on the right side of the cover being the whitish blur in the sea on the map."

Thanks!

She's So Unusual - Cyndi Lauper

The entry was referencing the rear cover (though the front cover is also probably at Coney Island as mentioned) - the wording and the URL I used may puzzle some now as the word 'rear' has been removed from the album title. If the album must not include any other words (rear, inside, etc.) then could you possibly change the text to:

"Rear cover show the parachute jump at Coney Island. The front cover is possibly at Coney Island too as the words 'The Wax Musee' can be seen on either side of Cyndi"

Creed - Human Clay [submitter]

Should be at 30.24075 N, 84.0165 W, in some empty looking rural area, roughly 2 miles SE of Fanlew, FL. I typed in incorrect coordinates, and it inadvertently placed the location near a river west of Tallahassee. My bad.

Desolation Boulevard - The Sweet

The location of the cover shot on this album is correct, but the Google map shows Sunset Strip to be a rather desolate stretch of road on Phillip Island in Victoria, Australia. Google maps probably doesn't recognise "Sunset Strip" as a legitimate name for that particular stretch of Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood.

0
SofaShark | 6 August 2008 - 10:21am

Woodstock - not the right Bethel, NY

The marker on the map is not the "correct" Bethel, NY where the Woodstock festival was held in 1969. As the caption says, Bethel was 43 miles southwest of Woodstock, yet the marker appears to be due east of it. The actual concert site was just west of Monticello and White Lake, NY. I believe that is Sullivan County, not Columbia County as the marker depicts.

Ever been to Manassas? It may seem like a bedroom community of DC, but that place is hickness embodied, only with a few housing tracts spread around the place. I went with a friend to Manassas, his hometown, and we spent the whole time driving around finding out what parking lot or creek we'd be hanging out at via cb radio. It's like South lite.

Related Error

The Dave Matthews Band entry for 'Live at the Gorge' shows Pearl Jam's cover. Here's the correct cover:

http://www.amazon.com/The-Gorge/dp/B0013GH990/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2?ie=UTF8&s=...

Amazon lists the album by DMB as both 'Live at The Gorge' and 'The Gorge'. The cover lists it as simply 'The Gorge' so perhaps it should be changed in the entry.

I was the one who posted the location (I shot the photo and designed the album artwork). However, I had to guess on the original map as I couldn't see the castle or gardens. Now that I can, I see exactly where the fountain is (at the very end of the garden, east side, next to the pond). Any way to move the marker over there, or is it too late?

Martha & the Muffins--mismatched album cover

Why is the cover of 'This is the Ice Age' attached to a map pointer of Beach Park, Toronto, wherein the poster is making reference to the song "Echo Beach"?

"Echo Beach" is on their album 'Far Away in Time'. So why is that cover image not being used?

0

Album Covers Question

Where does the artwork come from? I've submitted a couple of albums that were removed from the list.. I'm assuming because the artwork couldn't be found. Can it be submitted if you can't find it? Can we send along a link?

Thanks!

0
Robbman | 20 October 2008 - 5:54pm

Artwork

The artwork is almost never the problem. Invariably it's because the location given isn't precise (for instance, 'Mojave Desert' won't help anyone find the location for the cover shoot for Free's second album), or because the upload reflects the details of where the album was recorded rather than the location of the cover photograph.

0
Fraser Lewry | 20 October 2008 - 6:03pm

Album Covers

In these cases, I had the precise locations.. but the albums were more obscure. Especially since they're American albums. Just want to know if the artwork can be made available by the submitter, if it currently is not to the adminstrators.

0
Robbman | 20 October 2008 - 7:44pm

isn't an issue - and so far, we've not failed in tracking down a piece of artwork. If you want to try again, I'll let you know why the submissions don't make the grade if they get deleted again.

Hi,
I have told you about 3 items which may be in the wrong place on your map.
You have not moved them which is fine, but it would be nice to get a response and to hear the reason why not.
Isn't This page supposed to be a two way thing, we tell you about things which we feel are wrong and you respond either by doing something about said items or at least acknowledging our effort.
As it stands 3 items on your map may be in the wrong place which kind of defeats the whole purpose of having a map in the first place. Come on!
Please respond.

The current pinpoint for the album cover photo is at the junction of Mermaid Avenue and West 27th Street.

If you plug this address into Google Maps -> 2836 Mermaid Ave, Brooklyn, Kings, New York 11224 <- and hit Street View, you are looking at it. It's changed a bit, but still recognisable, as is the building to its right.

Neil Young's On The Beach

Surely Zuma Beach, not Santa Monica? I'm perfectly prepared to be wrong but would love some proof either way. Particularly as I'm going to Santa Monica in the morning and thought I might check it out.

EDIT: I went to Santa Monica beach yesterday, and compared to a visit to Zuma beach three years ago am pretty convinced it's the latter. Wasn't Young, along with members of The Band, living in Malibu in the mid 1970s? Plus, he did name an album Zuma two years later. If you compare the shape of the headland on the album cover with anything you can find on Google Images, it looks much more like Zuma Beach than Santa Monica.

The location for the Led Zeppelin cover is wrong. The Hindenburg crash site (and memorial) is here:

Archie Shepp - Live in San Franciso

I added this yesterday but neglected to credit my friend who found the location, I just took the photo. Can you add Richard Hart to the credit? Or remove my name and change it to Richard Hart? (Whichever is easier.)

Thanks,
Brandon Burke

I, Robot

I'm sorry to say you were not in Amsterdam. This in Paris: the world's worst airport.
Charles the Gaulle international airport is unmistakably for robots only.

I, Robot
Alan Parsons Project
Traveling in Europe once I was suddenly surprised to realize I was in the middle of the I, Robot album cover at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam. The people carrier tubes are unmistakable.

MISTAKE BY DIEGO MANTICA

The Bo Diddley "Have Guitar Will Travel" album cover is horribly misplaced on the map. Mr. Mantica places it on Northern Boulevard on the Roslyn - Manhasset boarder in suburban Long Island. The correct location is more than 20 miles away in downtown Brooklyn New York. The photo was taken in front of the Fox Theatre where Murray the K used to throw his famous early Rock and Roll shows. The photographer is standing in front of the now demolished masterpiece and the 368 address seen behind Bo is for 368 Livingston Street in Brooklyn, N.Y. This would be directly across the street from the Fox. And trust me, Bo Diddley was not wasting his time with a bunch of squares on Long Island.

Here you can see another photo from the same shoot with the Fox in the background:

By the way, this site is fantastic. I cannot wait to add content. I hope this helps.

McCartney

is in the wrong place. And the Ram cover also has the same location.

Is more correct, if my mrmory serves.
