The 1 - 9 - 90 Rule
Is this familiar ground to the Massive? I've seen this refered to a few times now in the more geeky corners of the web. It hasn't yet achieved "law" status (eg like my favourite which I was introduced to by the Massive, Godwin's Law), maybe becasues it's utter b*ll*cks.
The "rule" goes as follows:
According to recent data in most online communities, 90% of users are lurkers who never contribute, 9% of users contribute a little, and 1% of users account for almost all the action.
1% of users participate a lot and account for most contributions: it can seem as if they don't have lives because they often post just minutes after whatever event they're commenting on occurs.
9% of users contribute from time to time, but other priorities dominate their time.
(According to some things I've read these people primarily participate by commenting on content created and uploaded by the 1%)
90% of users are lurkers (i.e., read or observe, but don't contribute).
I thought I was just a blog reader. I put my lack of contribution down to an unhealthy interest in 70's metal bands and the fact that I don't give a rat's ass for His Bobness. Oh, and always finding the interesting treads about a week after everyone else has had their say. However - maybe I'm part of a much bigger demographic after all. Just how massive is the Massive? If all the lurkers replied would we be the exception that disproves this rule?

See, it's that bit where I spot the interesting threads
after everyone else. Except in this case I didn't.

I Think This Makes Me
a 9%-er
Same here I reckon..
Liking the way I lurk and lurkin the way I like
I only contribute to this one and A.N. other. Probably because these are the only sites that inspire me to write anything.
this rule is interesting
and is why I contributed comments for a while to nextbigthing as "Howard Wall" - Lindsay Hutton had reached the point when he felt he was slinging sausages up a close and asked everyone who was lurking for some feedback to see if it was worth carryin on - I could only pick "Howard Wall" as a nom-de-keyboard.
