Thames Valley Massive - end of year report

DogFacedBoy's picture

Firstly, thanks to everyone who came along tonight particularly newbie 'badger_king', I hope you were made to feel welcome amongst us old lags (no the 's' isn't silent) and had a good night.

Special kudos to Miss Hannah and Mr Roger for making the trek eastwards to the venue. Hannah's cake is believed to be the finest ever seen in the Home Counties. I like to think the high chocolate content was for my benefit. Top marks as ever, m'dear.

There were many subjects covered - Felix Bowness, the fucking Wiggles, Frank Zappa (natch) as well as judging the music coming from the private function downstairs. Rednex - 'Cotton Eye Joe' in 2011?

Plenty of books n stuff was swapped and the juicy leftovers will be hoisted onto the London mingle in January. There's some spare bootleg stuff so get there early!

There probably wasn't any photographic evidence as we don't roll like that in the Valley but take it from me, it was a great night.

A change of venue may be on the cards as Hannah got a ear bending over her cake and as we were practically keeping that place alive from 9pm after everyone else went home I find that a bit cunt-y to say the least. So any suggestions for a new place - bring em on.

So if you've come along to any of the mingles this year in Reading, thank you from your humble date organiser. Have a good Xmas and see you all in 2012.

Well done to DFB

Lovely to see everyone last night. I did think Vincepacket had bought his son along until someone pointed out that the young pup on the end was Badger King. Joe R - you look like one of us next to BK.

I thoroughly enjoyed myself and it has started of my Christmas Festivities in fine style.

Busy day

so late to the blog.

Badger King looked like my son? I'm flattered, he's a good-looking lad. Although I have to say, I was disappointed to discover that he is not an actual Rev - by the time I asked him if the TV show was true-to-life, he was definitely getting exasperated with explaining.

Anyway, lovely evening last night. Lots of banter and Christmas cheer. Guessing what song that DJ downstairs was going to play next was very good fun.

I too extend my warmest thanks to Hannah for the outstanding cake. I left before you got told off, probably just as well I wasn't there, I don't react too well to officious pricks with no customer skills.

Usual thanks go out to all who attended with a special nod to the Word Massive's V(i)P limousine service. Last night was Neil Jung's turn to drive me home. I think Leedsboy was actually jealous that he didn't have the honour.

A very merry Christmas and happy new year to all

I was personally very hurt.

I felt I had done something wrong the last time. I was especially hoping to drive past Justin Fletcher's house so I could go round in the morning and drop the kids off. I'm sure I read that because of the unique way the BBC is funded.....

Marvellous fun

I was there early with the estimable Rigid after a gruelling last day at work before Chrimble, so was in the mood for some decent company.

Which is what I got! A great pleasure to see you all.

Thanks for all the kit I shamelessly lifted without bringing anything at all in return. I like to think that kind of thing is 'raffish' and 'charming'. But it isn't. I owe.

I took another early bath (but not an 'Uppp and unnderrrr') for the usual reaons so missed Roger, Hannah and cake. I took solace in pie and chips. Which should be the title of my autobiography.

You're all fine people. Here's to another one soon.

Didn't realize the cake was a problem with Copa

Was that after I left? The miserable sods. The cake was lovely though, thanks to Hannah for that.

The pile of booty seems get bigger each time - I certainly left with more than I took. Despite the aural assault from the DJ with "The most cliched party CD in the world - ever", which has left me just a little hoarse this morning, it was the usual terrific evening. Good to see a newbie in the shape of badger king, and maybe the others who were considering coming will make it next time - you'll be very welcome.

Happy Christmas everyone - see you next year.

Stuff

Dave - I took away the Bruce live double of Innocent and Glory, the former of which is playing as I type; it's great. I haven't played BITUSA for years after massive over exposure, but look forward to hearing a modern live take of it. Also grabbed a couple of Zappa DVDs which I'm sending as a surprise present to my Zappa mad friend - he'll be thrilled. Also partook of the Zep DVD and double CD, which I'll play during the week. Many thanks for your generosity.

It was good to see the gang again. The venue was packed early on and noisy all night so not really to my liking this time. Almost met LeedsBoy, but geographically was at the wrong end of the table so didn't. Mostly chatted to Alex badger_king, who is so young I could have been his Dad, which was a sobering thought. Happily we found that we both love the mighty Sigur Ros, so got on very well. I'll bring some Werther's Originals to handout to the youngsters next time. Also briefly met the legendary Hannah for the first time, scoffed some of her splendid cake and promised to attend one of the Massive Meets next year.

I am useless at mixing

Will do it better next time. We shall have a special Sigur Ris corner.

Cheers All

Fourth (?) Thames Valley Mingle, and a thoroughly entertaining evening it was too.
An evening of wide-ranging chat ('Andrew Lloyd Webers first musical?', 'TV "stars" who live in Wokingham', Mike Oldfields first Virgin Records contract' and 'Why a Civil Service training is a barrier to successfully using Twitter').
If that wasn't enough - cake and free booty (if you know what I mean)

Themed CDs have been playing today as an accompaniment to the weekend chores (no CDs from Vince Packet, they were last seen on a train heading towards Redhill)

Left the house last night with a bag full of stuff which I no longer needed, but other may enjoy (Mrs D status: was smiling).
Returned 6 hours later with the same bag, but full of different stuff (Mrs D status: not smiling anymore (not even a copy of The Jam at Bingley Hall, could raise a smile))

Have a good Christmas all - Heres to 2012, when I am determined to pop my London cherry.

Thanks all for a good evening

Just managed to get to Reading in station to get on the train to Basingstoke then Andover, I had literally 30secs to spare! Running through Reading on a crowded Friday night, I must have looked a right nutball. So apologies for dashing on the dashing Hannah, but I had many a mile to travel. And then get up at 6 this morning for work at 8. Not recommended.

Will definitely try and get more involved with these mingle shenanigans. If only for free mix CDs. Will have a listen when I get home tonight. After all the people are tucked up in bed, the tunes will commence!

Thanks to all and sundry for making me feel welcome, good banter about post rock with Mr Jung, Hannah's ghostwriting and a visual demonstration by Mr "I always wanted to be called Vince" Packet of the madness that is Twitter. I remain unmoved sadly. Weird talking with you all and casually mentioning what you were up to in the 1970s. I only know about them through books!

Once again, cheers to all and sundry.

Keep on trucking,
Alex

Nice to see the gang again...

Thanks to Dave for the excellent DVDs - how you can still come up with old Punk Rock from the tele that I've never seen before is remarkable! Strangely enough, I spent the next day in the company of some of my old Punk Rock heroes that feature in said DVDs. I found out that Charlie Harper is only a couple of years younger than my dad..! And you think Badger King makes you feel old...
