Talking Of Springsteen..
I've been on a Boss kick these past couple of weeks, loaded up everything up to Tunnel Of Love onto the Ipod, hit random and settled back into my train seat and closed my eyes.
My favourite album is probably not one that everybody would name, Tunnel Of Love. There's a simplicity to the lyrics that I find really appealing, especially when you compare them to some of the other albums. And the title track is one of my favourite lyrics by anybody anywhere. Especially the following lines:
"Then the lights go out and it's just the three of us
You me and all that stuff we're so scared of"
Which I think in two simple lines says so much, far more than I read into it when I first heard it - blimey 22 years ago - when I was 19. I really think it's a wonderful bit of writing which resonates so much, and it's not just about a bad or dying relationship either, it pretty much fits any relationship.
It's also a great tune, dodgy 80s drum machine and all!

Always loved the opening of the title track
in very few words it paints a complete picture and is worthy of Chuck Berry. There is no higher praise possible.
Fat man sitting on a little stool, takes the money from my hands while his eyes take a walk all over you, hands me the ticket, smiles, and whispers "good luck"
This is my favourite
(If you can get past the dodgy black and white sequences):
"The darkness on the edge of town...
... has seeped into the master bedroom" was the line Mr Hepworth of this parish used to summarise the album at the time. Easy to forget it was the next album after BITUSA too.
I Iove the gentle, almost absent-minded, guitar picking on this song... and the line "When I look at myself I don't see the man I wanted to be..."
Good call in picking this album out, sir.
I think it's his most
I think it's his most intimate album.
It's one I turned to a lot going through my separation and divorce. I thought he found a great way of expressing some really complex emotions in very few words, as have already been called out.
Brilliant Disguise
is one hell of a song.
And seen live with a brass section
I love the album. The songs hang together. And when I saw him live in Sheffield in 1988 (I think) he had a fabulous brass section, La Bamba and the Hubcaps.
Tunnel Of Love - oh yeah!
I also agree with your opinions regarding the production, but the songs! It took me a while to understand/connect to the lyrics, or perhaps for my life to catch up with what he´s singing about.
God have mercy on the man who doubts what he´s sure of.
I want to know if it's you I don't trust...
...'cause I damn sure don't trust myself. Great, great stuff.
