Sympathy Buying
I was intending to buy Ron Sexsmith's "Long Player Late Bloomer" later in the month. I've been aware of him for a while and the track "Get In Line" is a favourite from the last Word CD.
I believe the recent documentary about him has already been mentioned round these parts, but I watched it for a second time last night and was so moved by watching it on Friday night, that I bought his album on Saturday, as I felt I had to help Ron's cause! Not that my £9 will make much difference in the long run and I was surprised that Scarborough's HMV even had it in stock! I kind of feel sorry for Ron and I felt he could do with another album sale. Anyway, I'm glad I did, it's a wonderful album and I'm sure someone will cover Love Shines and it will be a big hit one day, it really is the feel good song of the year so far and I can't stop playing it.
Have you ever bought an album out of sympathy for the artist?
Here's a clip from the film, still on the I-Player.

I keep throwing
money Peter Hammill's way.
Frequently
Usually at gigs where the artist is at the table by the exit, looking at you with pleading eyes as you pass. I'm a sucker for a sob story.
Soft Touch
Bought more than my share at gigs from support acts who I have enjoyed and who look as though they could do with a square meal.
Snap!
I did exactly the same as you. Was underwhelmed by Long Player, Late Bloomer when I heard it, pre-documentary, on Spotify. After Friday night I basically bought it to do Ron a favour. But here's the thing: once you get past the slick production, there are actually some cracking songs on there. So come on, Massive - dig deep!

not only but also ...
bought long player, late bloomer and cobblestone runway on friday - currently listening to all the other via spotify.
knowing me , i'll probably buy the lot by the end of the month!
You won't regret it
They're all great
Snap
Watched the doc on Saturday and got the new album on the back of it.
Like others, I'm not too sure about the production, but there are 3 or 4 excellent songs on there. "Believe It When I See It" is a classic.
I was robbed!
I paid £10 for it in HMV Stirling on Saturday.
I too, have problems with the production but immediately I found 4 or 5 great songs. Some artists these days give a bonus CD with the demos or an acoustic version of the songs....I'd have liked that!
Not his best
I love Ron Sexsmith but really don't like the production on this which is a shame because the songs are great.I prefer his albums with a more organic feel so would recommend Blue Boy, Whereabouts or the album that is widely thought of as his debut but actually isn't - Ron Sexsmith - the one with Secret Heart on it.
Ron - the albums
Five-star Classics
"Ron Sexsmith"
"Whereabouts"

Four-star very fine albums
"Other Songs"
"Retriever"
"Time Being"

Two-star disappointments
"Destination Unknown" (with Don Kerr)
Not heard yet:
"Long Player Late Bloomer"
hey, I like "Destination Unknown"!
Not least "Lemonade Stand" - lovely wee song.
Controversial
I'd put Retriever in the 5 star column. His best, I reckon.
Great to see that
the album is currently at number 9 in Amazon's bestseller's.
Who else deserves this BBC4 exposure I wonder?
Where to start?
I'd go with The Orchids, Trashcan Sinatras, The Jayhawks, Ian McNabb and HMHB for starters. All artists with a story to tell who have been chipping away for years.
I'm planning to buy it
as I have done with everything else Ron's done over the years. I love love love his music. Although I hate hate hate Autotune.
