Surprise! Michael Jackson residency delayed...

itf's picture

This email was sent this afternoon to those brave enough or foolhardy enough to have purchased opening night tickets for MJ's O2 residency...

You really have to admire the way that they try and flog a hotel via their "official travel package provider" in the same breath as apologising for the inconvenience.

---

Dear Customer

This afternoon Michael Jackson producers will be announcing the rescheduling and change of the opening shows in order to meet the challenges presented by such a large and technically complex concert.

Please allow us to apologise. It was not an easy decision to change the schedule but in the end we wanted to ensure that all of Michael's fans attending the concerts get the same quality in staging and level of entertainment.

We are writing to let you know that the 10th July concert that you purchased tickets for at the O2 arena has now been rescheduled for 1st March 2010. The tickets you receive will be printed with the rescheduled date and you will have the same seat originally purchased. You do not have to do anything as you will be automatically allocated the same seats and moved to the revised date.

We understand the inconvenience this may have caused and for this reason we have secured some excellent hotel deals for Michael Jackson fans travelling to London on these rescheduled dates. Please contact our official travel package provider Thomsonexperience at customerservice@thomsonexperience.com or call on +44 (0)20 74621563 for discounted deals on hotel beds in London. We can offer a 10% discount on all hotel bookings. Quote 'Michael Jackson rescheduled dates' in order to claim the offer.

If you cannot attend the revised date and want a full refund including booking fee, please contact us at Michaeljackson@Ticketmaster.co.uk or via our Michael Jackson Support line on 0844 277 9982.

Tickets will be dispatched closer to the event date.

Thank you for your understanding. Michael, who is directly involved with all aspects of the styling/choreography/band selection and rehearsals, is working around the clock to ensure this is the show to end all shows! We look forward to seeing you on 1st March 2010.

Regards

Ticketmaster - sent on behalf of AEG Live

Exhaustion

If he is going to be working around the clock until March next year, I can't imagine his dancing will be much cop.

0
epigone | 20 May 2009 - 7:43pm

Devastated

I find it hard to believe that he is "working around the clock" on these shows. I imagine you can count his personal daily input in minutes.

that's what comes from

buying pop concert tickets from a kettle manufactuer.
also am I being dim but this hotel deal is that to stay in greenwich from july to March, coz we've got a spare room if you want to come to terms.

Chris G | 20 May 2009 - 8:07pm

They won't happen

at all, will they?

0
Johan | 20 May 2009 - 8:08pm

In the event

that these shows don't happen, and we all know they won't, what's the form? Ticket value refunded, booking fee forfeited?

Not that I'm going of course, I'm just wondering what the scam is.

0
Captain Underpants | 20 May 2009 - 8:19pm

ahh you should have taken out

ticketmaster/morphy richards ticket insurance.

0
Chris G | 20 May 2009 - 8:23pm

The Math

Assuming he doesn't show, that's 1,000,000 tickets sold, booking fee £12.50 per order. Assuming the average order will be four tickets, that's a nice little earner for Ticketmaster: £3,125,000.

Hell, they get that money either way. Not a bad business to be in.

0
Fraser Lewry | 20 May 2009 - 8:32pm

I presume

that touring bands take out insurance in the event of having to cancel gigs due to illness etc. But surely no insurance company with any sense would insure these gigs, would they? Well, that or the premiums would be enormous.

0
Johan | 20 May 2009 - 8:37pm

Yes

And wasn't it reported that finding an insurer for these shows was a major sticking point to putting them on?

I should clarify, I'm not a fan, and I'm not going, but the whole circus is quite interesting.

0
itf | 20 May 2009 - 8:52pm

I should also clarify

I'm not a fan, and I am going. Because of the circus.

0
Fraser Lewry | 20 May 2009 - 9:15pm

I should also clarify

I am a fan a 3 speed pedastal oscillating 15" (in white) made by AEG Ltd....

0
Chris G | 20 May 2009 - 9:34pm

aren't they refunding the

booking fees as well; that's what it seems to say in the original email.

However, they'll have made a few bob on the interest off it. Nothing to what the promoter will have made on interest on ticket *sale* revenue mind...

Seriously - makes you think what in the name of tarnation is to stop *any* of us promoting a gig, no matter how outlandish, taking money and then cancelling it. Just for laughs, like!

Chris G | 20 May 2009 - 8:57pm

i have...

in my line of work i occasionally get to tell people they've a few bob coming their way and that they might want to do a bit of research into where to put their new found 'wealth'

Nowadays, i end up muttering something about 'mattresses' or 'clapped out nag running in the 3.30 at Haydock'...there's more chance of either a decent return, or at least the original amount being there...

0
ivan | 20 May 2009 - 9:55pm

Ah yes

You're right. Kinda makes a mockery of the whole idea of a booking fee. Presumably it's to cover the "work" involved in selling you a ticket, but refunding someone's money must take more time and effort effort than is involved in selling someone a ticket in the first place.

0
Fraser Lewry | 20 May 2009 - 9:21pm

The eternal booking fee question

If it costs x amount to put a bit of paper in an envelope and post it, why do they charge more booking fee for more expensive tickets?

0
itf | 20 May 2009 - 9:31pm

oh that's simple

because they're utter ******

(mods note - the remainder of this post has been removed as the writer went on a little bit of a rant...)

0
ivan | 20 May 2009 - 9:53pm

Do it yourself

My favourite euphemism used by ticket sellers is when you select the option to print the ticket yourself, at home, on your own printer, using your own toner, paper and electricity and they charge you a "convenience fee"!!

0
JohnW | 21 May 2009 - 5:39am

You're a real fan,

so you buy tickets for the opening shows so that you can be the first to see your hero. And now you're going to see him 8 months after everyone else? Well, I think if I were that real fan I would think that really, really sucked.

How on earth can they say that they can finish preparations for these shows in 7 weeks, but not in 6? That's ridiculous.

It's obviously not the real reason for the delay, so what could be? Time to squeeze in another op - that Will Carling chin is surely a work in progress? Perhaps he's still looking for that other glove? Maybe Bubbles needs more time in quarantine?

0
Johan | 20 May 2009 - 8:30pm

There's little chance

he'll show next year. Even if he does, he'll manage three or four shows at most.

0
Futurenoir | 20 May 2009 - 8:26pm

At least in March 2010

At least in March 2010 people will be able to get to the O2. Looks like there could be trouble for some attending the shows this July.

So far this has been

a complete media feeding frenzy followed by front page news that he has skin cancer. Is this getting the sad punters who forked out for this garbage prepared for the inevitable cancellation? I have said it before but we must be the most gullible consumers in the world. What a load of bollocks!!

0
Steve Turner | 20 May 2009 - 9:51pm

What are the odds at?

Didn't I read on the blog some months back that there was betting odds this event won't happen or he will cancel the tour by the 3rd or 5th show?

0
Andrew B | 21 May 2009 - 12:57am

Skin cancer?

Whose skin? It sure isn't his.

0
Retropath2 | 21 May 2009 - 7:15am

Can't help thinking

this was all in the schedule from the start

January: announce shows
May: announce sympathy-grabbing illness
June: postpone shows
September: cancel shows

0
Captain Underpants | 21 May 2009 - 8:18am

December 2011

Refunds finally made after court judgement.
