Surprise Birthday Party Reformation?

TJ Dizzle's picture

Just got one of seeticket's regular emails informing me of all the latest hip, hop and happening events they think i'd like to buy tickets for. Near the bottom of the list was this entry:

BIRTHDAY PARTY
A favourite of the late, great John Peel the Australian pop-punk band will be in the UK for two special dates in February. Book now!
http://www.seetickets.com/?e=birthday+party

What? Did I miss something? Nick Cave hasn't exactly been low on projects recently, and I feel the Birthday Party might lose some of their magic with 25 or so extra years on the clock and a good deal less heroin going around. I'm not even sure if they're all still alive. I'm more than a little skeptical at this point, since this email literally the only place I've seen this. Clicking through to the link doesn't convince all that much either. Anyone know anything about this?

Can't see it's Cave's lot

particularly as Mick Harvey has buggered off from the Seeds. Tracey Pew is no longer with us but Rowland S Howard played at Cave's ATP Festival in Oz just the other weekend

Release the facts

If that were true, it would be one of the most bizarre reformations of all.

You're assuming...

...the reformation includes Nick Cave!

confusion

Yeah, this has confused me as well....but when I clicked thru and saw that they are only charging 5 quid for the show there ain't NO WAY it's THE Birthday Party. I think what we have here is a new band either ignorant of the previous incarnation or that just doesn't care. Something tells me there will be more than a few THE Birthday Party fans showing up to this show and being sorely disappointed and or pissed off.

Or maybe the ad means...

..there's a birthday party on that night and they're closed to the public :-)

They already did it once

about fifteen years ago at the Town & Country club during a week of charity gigs organised by the NME. Cave & The Bad Seeds headlined one of the nights and about half way through the set, having already had Shane McGowan on as a guest for a duet of What A Wonderful World, Cave stepped up to the mike and mumbled something about doing something special as it was a charity gig. On walked Howard as Harvey moved to the drums and the band played, as I remember, three or four Birthday Party songs. Dead Joe was one, as was Wild World. I can't remember the other two, but it was fantastic.

Well, if anyone figures it out please inform because I'll cry if it's them and I miss it.

Is the clue in the phrase 'pop-punk'

Hardly brings to mind Deep In The Woods or Release The Bats does it?

Further thoughts

It also strikes me as slightly odd that the bill has four or five other acts unknown to me. Would there be quite so much support needed for such a gig? And at only a fiver?

My guess is probably that somebody at seetickets either screwed up or is lying. But i'd be happy to be proved wrong...
