Supersonic Festival 2010

Grant's picture
When:
22nd - 24th October 2010
Where:
Birmingham Custard Factory
Comments:
From free-jazz and electronic improv to Grindcore, calling in at Kosmische Musick by way of Plunderphonics across 3 under-cover stages, Supersonic has become THE leftfield festival of choice. Broad in its' scope yet with a very strong Japanese element this year, acts such as Napalm Death, Chris Corsano, KK Null, Swans, Michael Rother, Godflesh, James Blackshaw and Melt Banana as well as film / video presentations and discussion groups presented a dizzying variety of performances to enjoy. Personal highlights (amongst many) were Gnaw's industrial doom, the reformed Godflesh, Eagle Twin, Necro Deathmort, Black Sun Drum Corps, KK Null, Melt Banana's triumphant Saturday night performance, Jailbreak with Chris Corsano and Michael Rother's glorious rebooting of Neu! and Harmonia tracks with HalloGallo 2010.
The Audience:
A broader mix of ages and sex than I'd anticipated. The vibe was very friendly and good natured-even extending to the mosh pit and crowd surfing which abided by old-school "Pick-a-Brother-up" rules.
Food & Drink:
The Purity Brewing Company Bar were drank dry of their cask ale by Sunday evening. Bar prices elsewhere were comical. Tea and scrummy cakes were available as were soul food, Persian, Japanese and Italian foodstuffs. All of it was well-prepared.
It Made Me Think...:
The "weirder" the music, the nicer the people. Talking to complete strangers about Throbbing Gristle and then headbanging with them to Michael Rother was deeply life-affirming.
