Summer playlist

Right, seen as I break up for a well-deserved holiday on Thursday I thought it best I make a summer playlist to get me through the traffic at the weekend.

Something that reminds me of family holidays, light nights and cold drinks.

One thing I noticed whilst listening to the below collection, most songs with summer in the title are actually sad songs, about summer ending, being cruel or raining...

So far,
‘The last day of summer’ from The Cure’s much maligned, and totally under-rated ‘Bloodflowers’ album.

‘Long sleeves for the summer’ by The Smith’s tribute band, Gene.

Of course I’ve got to have ‘Die in the summertime’ from the Manic Street Preachers. Summer never sounded so angry.

‘Summer moved on’ by A-ha.

A touch of the 80’s, when summers were hotter and more fun, with ‘Cruel summer’ by Banarama.

‘Girls in their summer clothes’ from the Boss’s latest album, ‘Magic’.

I was hoping Faithless would add some stomping beats with ‘Crazy English summer’ from their ‘Outrospective’ album, but it’s actually a laidback number for lazing in the grass.

Moby offers some nice piano on ‘Summer’, a b-side from the ‘Play’ era.

The Divine Comedy’s ‘The summerhouse’ is typical Neil Hannon, all romantic nostalgia.

The playlist is also made up of –

Feeder ‘Summer’s gone’
Robbie Williams ‘Summertime’
Manic Street Preachers ‘Indian summer’
The Avalanches ‘Summer crain’
Placebo ‘English summer rain’
Billy Joel ‘Summer, Highland Falls’
Captain ‘Summer rain’
Kirsty MacColl ‘Last day of summer’
Placebo ‘Summer’s gone’
The Flaming Lips ‘It’s summertime’

Summertime, and the living is easy...

This one song says it all: I have these versions on my i-pod, but there are over 4000 all-in, apparently.
Ella Fitzgerald (+/- Louis Armstrong) BB King, Booker T, Gary Burton, Charlie Parker (+/- Chet Baker), Herbie Hancock with Joni Mitchell, Joe Pass, McCoy Tyner,Modern Jazz Quartet, Peter Gabriel, Sarah Vaughan, Zombies and Zoot Sims. Disappointed I don't seem to have Janis Joplin, but do have Candy Dulfer

Summertime again...

I'll stick with the version I posted up above! Absolutely storming version

XTC

"Summers Cauldron" and "Grass" from the Skylarking album. Guaranteed to make you feel like you're on a lovely Summer Sunday afternoon. While we're at it, "Love on a Farmboys Wages" from their Mummer album is pretty summery too....

Just the two so far

My summer playlist this year is basically Goldfrapp's Seventh Tree album and the Shortwave Set's Replica Sun Machine. I may yet add to it - I'm really enjoying In the Salpêtrière by Paris Motel but I'm not sure if it's a summer album.
