Struggle with web filter...

wirralboy's picture

Evening all.

I've recently installed the free Bluecoat K9 Web Protection software.

It's doing a good job at screening away nasties from 11 year olds, but it's also very good at blocking all the content that us folks post here on our blog entries, and I'm missing out!!

Any ideas? I've checked the help topics that came with the software, but the pointers provided haven't worked.

All help gratefully received.

Cheers.

Wirralboy.

K9

The main problem with filters like this is that they're not very clever. Some will block sites for "offences" like using Google's analytics code in their pages (as we and hundreds of thousands of other sites do), so it's not even our content which is causing the problem. Is there some kind of whitelist you can add our URL to? I can't imagine the software doesn't operate such a workaround.

K9

Hello Fraser, appreciate your quick response.

I've added the url http://www.wordmagazine.co.uk/ to the allow list, but it seems to make no difference.

Arse.

Try

Adding http://www.google-analytics.com/ as well. Beyond that, you're probably best off asking at Bluecoat's forum.

Try OpenDNS

I've found this is a very effective and adaptable service to keeping out the less salubrious parts of the Intenet. There website explains how to setup the service (there is a free option to try out).

The only drawback I've seen is that it also sets itself up as the automatic search option when you type incomplete addresses into Firefox address bar.

User accounts?

Can't the software be set up to use different criteria for different user accounts on the computer?

Alternatively, ask the 11-year-olds - they probably know a way round it all :)

Sadly, no, And weirdly, I

Sadly, no, And weirdly, I know more than my 11 year old, at the moment.
I fully expect that to change once she starts at the local grammar.

Wirral

The solution is simple. You open up the file the subfolder marked " " deleting the but not forgetting ## ###### wheelsprings to the left but just below ^668********

Minor correction

I've been trying this for the last hour and I've just realised that the third hash should have been a tilde. I don't know why I didn't spot it straight away, it's common sense really.

Sod the Internet

Stick to Teletext.

Having just watched the latest ep of the BRILLIANT 'Outnumbered' I have decided that as soon as the Adkids are 'of impressionable web-savvy age' (next week) we're selling the Macs and the telly and moving to the Shetlands with a portable typewriter under each arm.

Bollocks to the 21st Century.

Adman-

Is Outnumbered the thing with Hugh Dennis? Haven't seen it, though most folk say it's good.

Sorry about delayed reply.

Yes. The very same.
It's just excellent. Worth a watch. Series 3 running at present.
