Entertainment For Lively Minds
Strannge to see an Alan Parsons related thread to appear today when...
...one half of the Alan Parsons Project passed away today:

Despite the shooting fish in a barrell tendencies of today's other posting I must confess to liking a goodly proportion of the APP's output. Slightly over wrought at times, a little bit smug and too clever by half at others but always done with class and aplomb. Some of the lead vocals were brilliant, ht eorgchestratinos were as luch and symphonic as a very symphonic thing and players like bassist Davey Paton and guitarist Iain Bairnson remain sadly under-rated in my opinion. Woefully untrendy but it still has a little place in my heart and it's sad to hear of Eric Woolfson's sad demise.
And above all, I will always fondly remember the Alan Parsons Project as a deadly laser gun on the moon.

That should of course be...
"the orchestrations" and "lush" - bah, flippin' keyboards. I'm sure the keys move around when you're not looking.
I have plenty of time for them too
Admittedly I haven't listened to them for ages (spotify beckons), but I used to love their first two albums, and the occasional later stuff I heard had its moments too, particularly this song:
the Alan Parsons Project as a deadly laser gun on the moon
Such a pity the alternative name of Operation Wang Chung never gained traction...
sad news
I liked ver Project quite a bit and still have a soft spot for much of their output. I know it's not cool but the transition from Sirius to Eye in the Sky sends shivers down my spine. I don't know why, it just does.
And the bit in Where's the Walrus...
...where it drops out to silence for three beats does the same to my spine.
There are some great arrangements on Eye In The Sky. Anyone heard Jonatha Brooks' version of the title track? A fantastic cover version which takes the song in a completely different direction.
good call
That really is a fantastic trick isn't it? It totally wrong-foots you every time, even if you know it's coming.
They might have been a soft rock band, but there was something going on.
Yeah, ironic that my favourite bit of the song...
...is the bit where no-one's playing. Well, the bit just after when they come back in, really (before anyone makes a sarky comment!!).
regarding the laser comment
I was the only person in the cinema who laughed at that. Similarly, in Wayne's World 2, the 'Oh wow, is that a UNIX book?' line also got me. Mike Myers has a very peculiar sense of humour.
