What's it called?:
Beachcomber's Windowsill
What It Sounds Like:
Come Stornaway! Float your pretty notes through the window of my seaside cottage as day turns gently to night! (And if that sounds over-romantic, well, that's what happens when you hear the words:‘I saw you blink/and I missed your eyes.’) 'I saw you blink' is the most commercial song on this album of jumbly, sweeping lays, but the eccentric, incidental touches meld this from listenable to marvellous. Notably: The energetic pianist thrashing away on 'Boats and Trains',the male voices shantifying on 'Zorbing' (which owes more than a tug of the forelock to Bon Iver)& the banjo on 'We are the Battery human'. The musicians will intermittently all bundle in for a good old group thump and it's those rich dollops of 'Everyone' emerging at unusual moments that have an oddly cheering effect. Brian Briggs sings earnestly, like a young boy performing for an audience of one. One he really cares about. And even if that sentence sounded cheesy, the effect doesn’t.
What Does It All "Mean"?:
Music for the Maudlin can be beautiful and uplifting. As it should be. This album is a fishhook - the violins and melodies calmly waiting to catch your mood, lifting it up and out into the sunshine.
Goes well with...:
Nothing. Listen and let it do its work
Might Suit People Who Like...:
Bon Iver, The Decemberists, Iron and Wine, The Coral, Kate Bush, Fleet Foxes...but who fancy something a little less quirky for tonight.
