Stone me! Coming up smelling of Roses!!

daff's picture

Saw this on line a few minutes ago:

"The Stone Roses bassist Mani has confessed that he didn't realise his tour advance payment would be so big.

The star revealed that he went to a cashpoint to withdraw money for food shopping only to discover that £2 million had been deposited into his account, reports The Sun.

Mani told his friends back home in Stockport: "It's madness. I only went out to buy milk and things. I went to the cashpoint and someone has stuck nearly £2 million in while I wasn't looking.

"The whole world's gone crazy. I could have fallen over backwards when I saw the balance."

The band were aware that they would receive an advance from the high sales of their reunion tour and festival dates, but did know it would be as much as they had been given".

I'm chuffed for him

They were a very influential band and gave enjoyment to millions, yet only John Squire seemed to make any cash first time round.

I looked at my account this morning

and had less than I had hoped. I am so not like a rock star in every way imaginable.

But we part own them!

Come on Mani, do the sensible thing and give it back.

Half of it will be gone in tax

So we do get a fair chunk of it back!

I doubt it.

It's probably in the name of Mountfield Bass Services Ltd or something and he'll pay corporate rates.

Maybe

But that's still 26% up front plus 25% of the remainder if/when he pays it out as a dividend.

Nice work if you can get it.

I would've thought that either a manager or an accountant or a rep from the record company would've notified him post-negotiations. Or maybe he's a bit like me and throws all the post on the table and forgets about it.

I'm amused...

That it's gone into his current account. How very down to earth. Bonbo would have it shipped to the Dutch Antilles without touching the UK or Ireland.

Does anyone remember that Robert Smith story?

EDIT - Found the proper story, posted here in June 2010 by NardiniNick.

"Around 20 years ago, Robert Smith was staying with an acquaintance of mine in Ireland. Smith's bank manager (from Barclays in Harlesden, I recall) rang the house several times, but Robert refused to go to the phone, fearing he would be chastised for the size of his overdraft. At the fourth time of asking, Robert summoned up the courage to take the call - and minutes later was beaming ear-to-ear. Apparently, the bank manager had been under strict instructions to make contact because his branch wasn't authorised to hold current accounts containing more than £2m. That's right, Smith had over two million quid in his current bank account and he actually thought he might be overdrawn."

And as there's a cover of a Cure song on Adele's second album,

he must be grinning every time he looks at his bank account at the moment.
