Stimpy's on the road again - The Dead in 2009
Just a quick post to say hi from the west coast - up early as a result of a long flight in and last night's Dead show at the LA Forum.
A fantastic gig; the first time I've seen the The Dead - although I'd heard 'tapes' of all the previous shows on this tour - I guess my first reaction was that they're still a grrreat live band. They're not the same band as The Grateful Dead; Jerry's absence is too noticeable for that, but they've managed to build a new band that takes the best bits of the old band whilst not coming across (too much) like a tribute or nostalgia act.
Breakfast then off to travel to the Bay for tonight's show at the Shoreline Amphitheater - one of the band's traditional stomping grounds.
For those that care about such things - the set list was:
Viola Lee Blues
Bertha
Viola Lee Blues
Caution Do Not Step On The Tracks
Viola Lee Blues
Black Peter
Cosmic Charlie
Shakedown Street
New Speedway Boogie
Scarlet Begonias
Fire on the Mountain
Drums
Space
Dark Star
Wharf Rat
Dark Star
Satisfaction

Happy trips!
Thanks for the post, Stimpy. If anyone wants to listen to the show, you can buy a copy from The Dead's website (http://www.deadnetstore.com/dead050909.aspx for Stimpy's first show) (I remember when they were free...) or listen a GD Radio Hour (http://www.dead.net/features/gd-radio-hour/grateful-dead-hour-no-807) which inevitably contains some great music. Happy trips!
Dateline: San Francisco 10th May
Just got back to the hotel after another fine The Dead show. This time at the Shoreline Amphitheater, The Grateful Dead's home gig for most of the 1980s/90s.
A different vibe tonight for several reasons; it's the first hometown show; it's the San Fransciso gig, so all the *proper* freaks were out in force; the show started a little late and the band seemed a little more hyped up than yesterday - new keyboardist Jeff Chimenti was on particularly good form (especially considering the usually fatal results of occupying the keyboard stool in the The Dead)
This weekend has been a real pleasant surprise for me - I was hoping the band would still have some of the spirit of The Grateful Dead about them but I didn't, for one moment, expect them to be this good. It could almost be Bickershaw again :-)
I'm supposed to be flying back tomorrow evening but I'm tempted to try and score a ticket for the second San Francisco gig and stay here a couple of days longer. That's a job for tomorrow.
I seem to remember one of the Dylan threads where someone was suggesting that no-one but Dylan changes his setlist each night - the The Dead are barely playing more than one or two songs on successive nights
The setlist was:
Help On The Way
Slipknot!
Franklin's Tower
Good Lovin'
Cassidy
Bird Song
Uncle John's Band
Unbroken Chain
That's It For The Other One
Rhythm Devils
Space
Sugaree
Gimme Shelter
Sugar Magnolia
Saint Stephen
The Eleven
Touch Of Grey
Vocals
Who sings Jerry's lead vocal parts ? His voice was distinctive as well as his guitar playing, and quite a few of the songs in the set lists from the nights you've seen would've featured his singing. (NB I haven't listened to the shows online yet)
Good luck with the extended stay
If you get the chance.....
ask 'em if they will be popping over this time. I'm sure a few nights at Symphonyy Hall would be manageable.
Not wanting to gloat or anything...
but I managed to get a ticket for tonight's second Shoreline gig - the Dead decided they needed a three day break in SF between gigs - so I had no option but to hang around here as well. It's a hard life.
Been staying with friends in Sausalito - lovely weather - but it does mean I *still* haven't seen the new Word yet.
