Stimpy: Some self-regarding nonsense

stimpy's picture

This is likely to be my last posting here for a few weeks, not because I'm doing a flounce but because for the last few months I've been - apparently unsuccessfully - battling cancer so, as a last resort the surgeons have reverted back to the old-school "Let's open him up and chop everything out" approach.

I gather this is, quite literally, kill or cure as there's only 50/50 odds that I'll make it through the operation. 3 months of fading away have left me with virtually no body mass or muscle or energy or any of those things that are useful when undergoing major surgery.

I know there are some members of the massive who disapprove of the blog being used for 'personal' stuff but I didn't simply want to drop off the end of the world without saying thanks for the (unwitting) support over the last few months. As always, there's been something on here to make me laugh, think, remember or even just distract me from the pain.

I'm going back into hospital today and I gather they don't have Internet connectivity or wi-fi on the surgical wing - something to do with it interfering with the machines that go ping.

If I don't reappear after a couple of weeks then open the Aspidistra & Hatstand and raise a glass to me :-)

Stimpy.

That is such sad news.

I really dont know what else to say.

My very best hopes & wishes to you & yours.

I wish you well

and pray you have a successful operation. I have always regarded you as one of the regulars and you seem to have been on here forever. A bloody awful disease that seems to be all around us - my dad has bowel cancer and my brother in law had prostate cancer 5 years ago that hasn't gone away by any stretch of the imagination. I think this is exactly what this blog is for so bollocks to anyone who disapproves. All the best Stimpy.

Your posts have been a vital part of this uniquely appealing corner of cyberspace and I'm sincerely hoping that they'll continue for a long time yet. Bless You and all my Best Wishes

Every cancer is different but back in May 1985 I had a similar chat with a surgeon;

In my case the chemo wasn't working so the options were either surgery or hope for the best. Not a hard choice but in my case I felt much better moving forward after I sorted out some unresolved differences with a close relative. If you have any outstanding disputes then please make an effort to sort them out before the IV lines and everything else kicks in.

I'm sure you have been through similar conversations over the past couple of weeks and my heart goes out to you.Stay positive because really there isn't any option.

I alway look out for your posts as you've always been a source of wry self deprecating posts. I'm not the only one around here looking forward to your return.

God Bless.

Good luck, Stimpy, and my thoughts are with you.

My mother-in-law has just been in hospital for her third operation in two years, including two life-saving emergency ops, and I have the greatest sympathy for anybody facing a serious procedure.

I can fully imagine the stress and anxiety faced by everybody at Chez Stimpy, and I hope everything goes really well.

I can barely consider myself

I can barely consider myself as a member of this fine board, and though I don't know you (and vice-versa!), I want to wish you the very best of luck in your fight.

Inner strength is a rare & much sought after commodity. I know from posting at similar boards that the sense of community you can find from places such as this can actually forge it. I hope this is the case.

Fight the good fight. I look forward to your story of conquering it.

0

A suggestion

If somebody who visits Stimpy would be so kind, it would be great to print this and take it to him in hospital.

When I was in intensive care a few years ago, anything that indicated anybody in the outside world even spared a second's thought for me was an unbelievable source of strength and comfort.

There are so many messages on here that maybe somebody else has posted this idea and I apologise, but I'll gladly take the risk of plagiarism this time around.

And I'll pay for the reams of paper and thousands of inkjet cartridges.

Get well soon, Stimpy.

21
epigone | 26 August 2011 - 12:25pm

this is true

I had an extended stay in hospital and via my Mum, friends inna area were notified, from there it went to the place I met them (MyHeartland - a The Sisters Of Mercy forum).
When I came home there were several pages of "Get Well Blast!" messages.
Damn! it felt good.

0

All best wishes to you stimpy.

I rely upon you to find that tangential take on life that often eludes me. I've been out of the country for a while, and missed this thread until my return last night (Twang tipped me off); I wanted you to know I was sending my best thoughts. I'd light some incense, mutter an incantation, consult the crystals and offer up some prayers to something or other, but as neither of us has much time for any of that bollocks, I'll just say Good Luck, and hope to see you back here as soon as you can make it.

Brilliant news

So glad to hear that Stimpers. Good for you. get better and keep buying synths! I have an irrational desire to buy a Wasp. Any good? They are stupidly expensive though I remember them coming out and they were cheapo.

0
Twangothan | 3 September 2011 - 2:03pm

A Wasp can sting you if you're not very careful

They were built down to a price and, consequently, used horrible plastic and a touch-sensitive keyboard. 30 years on, the plastic has gone brittle and inevitably, the keyboard doesn't work. Think of them as the Sinclair ZX80 of the synth world.

Having said that, they were a very capable little synth for their time and had a clever (if proprietary) pre-midi interface which allowed you to connect something like 128 Wasps together. Of course, using that now relies on you finding at least two that are still working :-)

I have seen something called a Wasp Deluxe that had a proper keyboard and a wooden cabinet but I suspect that was a one-off or prototype.

To be honest I'd say it was strictly for the collectors these days and, if you want some knob twiddling fun, there are better options out there. If someone if offering you one for £50-£100 quid then by all means bite their arm off but don't pay £300-£500 for one.

0
stimpy | 6 September 2011 - 2:58pm

So you *are* feeling better ;-)

This is a little belated owing to out-of-touchness on my part, but may I just say:

Whoo-hoo! Go, stimpy!

So pleased to hear from you

Was out of the country when I read your post on my phone, and kept checking back every time we hit wi-fi. Don't trust myself to post from my phone, but hopefully the good vibes from deepest Wyoming got through!

Right, I'm off to the Aspidistra and Hatstand - what are you having?

Fab and groovy

Really excellent news and so pleased to see you back.

I'm seriously considering a Landrover - anything cheap to run (I'm fairly mechanical) you could recommend for a Northumberland winter?

But mainly - GET WELL SOON - that's really relieved me and cheered me up too

All I can talk about is old 'analogue' Land-Rovers

the modern (post 1990) ones are a closed book to me but with that in mind I'd give the following advice...

All 'Series' Land-Rovers from 1948 to 1990 are pretty much the same, although Series I vehicles are 65 years old now and collectors items.

If you want solid, reliable, simple transport then I'd go for a Series 3. You can pick them up for pennies, LR still sell all the bits you might ever need and you can fix them with nothing but an adjustable wrench. If needs be you can even tune them to run on banana oil or coconut oil - they were designed to keep on trucking in the worst conditions the world could throw at them :-)

However, flat out they'll only do 50mph, the steering and clutch weigh a ton, if fitted, the heater will be worse than useless, and if you have a canvas roof it will leak like a sieve, but they are unstoppable. You manually stir the three gearsticks (gear, 2/4wd, high/low range) to get the exact drive you need for the conditions..

The modern Defender is, essentially, the continuation of the Series vehicles so, everything above applies to a Defender as well as a Series 3. As you might expect, the Defender has slowly increased in complexity and comfort over the last 20 years but, under the skin, it's still a Series 3

If you're out in the wilds then invest in an official LR 'stage 1' 1 day training course before the big snows hit and you'll really learn how to get the best from your vehicle. I was staggered by what my 50 year old Series 2 can do.

ah yes, fond memories

when I lived out in the wilds of south Shropshire I had a 1967 short wheelbase model. Like you say, it only did 50mph foot on the floor and the heater was incredibly primitive, but mechanically it was indestructible.

What killed mine was the chassis had badly corroded and I kept having to have it patched up. Eventually, I had to stop using it and when I moved away I gave it a local farmer.

I am not worthy etc

Thanks Stimpster maybe a decent piece of machinery will make me less doomy and leftie and buck my ideas up a bit too - much appreciated!

Hey, the LR cares nothing for class or politics

The Queen still drives a Series 3 around Balmoral as does the 70-odd year old smallholder further up my valley. That's one of the reasons I love 'em, you can carry a couple of sheep in the back then, the following day, turn up at a society wedding in the same vehicle.

I reckon a series LR is the only truly classless vehicle.

stimpy | 8 September 2011 - 1:23pm

I'd be enchanted to go to a society wedding

With a couple of sheep in the back of my proposed LR. Do you need to leave them much water and forage or are they generally OK for a few hours?
