The Alarm - Knocking On Heaven's Door
Allegedly a song Mike Peters taught Bono to play
Bryan Ferry
Big fan, great interpreter.
"It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" - Them
The Soup Greens...
...doing Like A Rolling Stone as if it were Louie Louie:
I have always been here before
one of my favourite guitar solos too - sparse, all the correct notes in all the right places
Stating the bleedin' obvious
as usual
It may be stating the obvious Dave..
..but it surely towers over everything else.
An object lesson in how to interpret a great song, keep its mystery and define it forever.
Madeleine Peyroux
but Shane's right.
Adam and Immy do this.....
......it's a long time since I can remember Counting Crows being mentioned here
Melanie
Mr. Tambourine man
Rolling Stones
I love the Stones version of LARS.
This is my favourite
purely because I'd heard the song dozens of times and never thought anything of it but in the hands of a good singer like Robert Palmer it sounds like a standard.
The Turtles - "It Ain't Me Babe"
Hendrix first...
...but I do like this one, especially the Bob impersonation in the middle
Fairport Convention and Sandy Denny did a few..
but this is my favourite -
Damn.
You beat me to it. Excellent choice !
Equally obvious, I guess, but worth a mention
And, in a slightly more obscure vein
And so
did you with The Band! Bah Humbug...
One more
I forgot this one

And I *still* say...
It's Shawn Colvin's version of You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go. Sadly I can't find it on youtube, but what's interesting is that there are a lot of covers of her version, which is a quite beautiful guitar arrangement. For what it's worth, "Stevie" plays it the best, "folkerm" sings it best. But Shawn sings and plays it perfectly. It just is perfect. Spotify link here.

One of the consistent pleasures of prowling this site is the sheer quantity and quality of brilliant recommendations and suggestions from everyone. I don't know that many Dylan fans *in real life*, so this is all really really appreciated!
I've had a most enjoyable hour or so checking out the suggestions above, and I have to thanks Azeem for that tip - you're spot on. It might take a while for it to become my all-time favourite, for what thats worth, but it is sublime. And Seamus's slice of frantic garage pop is brilliant too. Never heard that before and its ace.
With respect, I could never *quite* get Bryan Ferry and Dylan - I know its been pretty much universally acclaimed, but it just doesn't work for me. Oh well. We'll always have 'Jealous Guy' - now that was a magical cover!
Anyway, matching the idiosyncrasies and originality of the composer with bucketloads of her own, this is gorgeous.
Lucinda Williams does a smashing version....
...of Positively 4th Street. There isn't a youtube link and it's not on Spotify.
I'm being no help whatsoever here as I can't even remember what album it's on.....but I promise you, she does do it.
Magnet & Gemma Hayes
Positively pop-tastic!
As usual, the answer is
Rod Stewart.
You know - when he was good. Heck, even Dylan was still good then.
It could be "Girl From the North Country" or "Tomorrow is a Long Time" but above all it's "Mama, You've Been on my Mind"

More Watchtower
The sadly departed Michael Hedges
Saw him in San Fran back in the early 90s on his own, and most of the time it sounded like there were 6 guitarists on stage.
