Gilbert O'Sullivan "Alone Again, Naturally" February 2011

Magnificent

Whatever muse was working on GO'S during those years - "We Will" "Nothing Rhymed" "Claire" etc - is the equal of any music written in the late 20th Century, yay, e'en up to and including James Taylor.

A Cracking Song

They really don't write many songs as good as this one.
He must very proud of himself for this. I know I would be.

Great song...

Do you think it's his?

I noticed your comment on the "Controversial music opinions" thread got huge support Patrick, and rightly so. One of the best of the 70's and most other decades to be honest.

Along with 'Nothing Rhymed',

'Alone Again, Naturally' is one of his finest songs. It's just a story song, but it's beautifully constructed, and there's a surprising depth given to the lyric by that word at the end of the title.

I'm reminded of a line from a Duncan Browne song from 1972; "We are born alone and we die alone, and we cannot possess anyone in between". Obviously the 70s weren't all about eye-liner, tank-tops and stacked heels. Or haircuts.

I choose Gilbert O'Sullivan

Musical fashion can come and go and do whatever it damn well pleases, but that will always be a lovely song.

Too damn sad..

for me at the moment. But a great song.

It's been too damn sad for me, too...

... for the last 34 years. I still can't listen to it without blubbering like a baby.

Help please

It is a lovely song but I don't have it. It's my 50th Birthday next week and I'm having a bit of a do. I've been building up a playlist as the 'soundtrack of my life' and would love to include this. I've looked on Amazon (too expensive) and iTunes (not available). Does anyone have an mp3 they could share with me. This song and 'Nothing Rhymed' would be wonderful.

Cheers.

Apparently...

...he can only play in one key on the piano (ie using one set of shapes/moves across the keys), so he has an electric piano with a button to magically shift the pitch from C to A or B or E or whatever. Not necessarily a criticism - we can't all be virtuosos, and having technical limitations should be no bar to creating a platform if you've something to offer - but intriguing nonetheless, isn't it?

I would suggest....

That not being a virtuoso is a positive advantage in most cases.
