Steve Martin

Lunaman's picture

Steve Martin is in London playing the Hammersmith Odeon. He is a very good banjo player. It struck me tonight that he has provided some top notch quality entertainment from when I first bought his live album with King tut around 1979. The Jerk,All of me,Dead men don't wear plaid,Trains, planes & automobiles,Roxanne there have been so many. I have probably only touched some of his many moments but it dawned on me tonight how good his career has been. So here's one lttle piece of one of the many films I enjoyed -

He's made some great films

But the majority of his 90s output was pretty rum, with Sgt Bilko being the nadir.

I'm reminded of the Dennis Pennis incident. Harsh but true.

He can still be funny

check out his website or his books (especially Pure Drivel) but he seems to do the same tired old pick-up-the-paycheck shlock on the big screen. Oh for a return to the majesty of Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid and The Man With Two Brains.

He even does some decent music. Check out the song he did with Paul McCartney. Quite gorgeous.

All of Me

is a fantastic film. Makes me cry with laughter. Me and my friends still use "Fix Bowl" as one of our catchphrases.

Round Here Also

"backinbowl, backinbowl" is a regular cry

...and the courtroom scene

- it still makes me weep with laughter

Ruprecht

It has to be Ruprecht.

Absolutely agreed

That's one of my favourite comedy scenes.

'Not Mother?' and 'Excuse me...' are still catchphrases in use in our gang.

Great film

'Bowfinger' (1999) is excellent as well.

Bowfinger

Is one of my favourite ever comedies! After watching it for the first time, I woke my good lady wife who was passed out on the couch beside me, and watched it all over again!

Not just films / music

His memoirs "Born Standing Up" and novel "The Pleasure Of My Company" are very very good indeed.

Exactly like Robin Williams

Pure standup genius followed by decades turning in simpering horror after simpering horror in Hollywood so they could buy lots and lots of drugs or contemporary art, as the case may be.

And you know what? I bet neither of them regrets a minute of it. I know I wouldn't.

A hundred things I Iike about Steve Martin...

...here's one.

ah, The Jerk

I saw someone literally roll in the aisles during this film. He was laughing so much he needed more space, I wasn't far behind.

Steve is awesome

He is genuinely humble. He knows he's not the best player (he is good but...) in this group - and what's important to him ? That everyone gets their name check on the biggest TV chat show.

And if that wasn't enough - he's set up a prize for better banjo players than he is himself :

Steve Martin is a country gent.

Do you think

he'd like to buy a Ukelele?

Parenthood

I thought Parenthood was pitched perfectly. Slightly edgy subjects interspersed with the daily family grind. Usual Hollywood ending but a funny film.

Always happy to have an excuse to post this

A "personal" reply to a fan letter - if there's such a thing as being "casually hilarious", this certainly qualifies:

Mustapha Kunt

off topic I know, but the letter above reminded me of this:

It always makes me smile and, bizarrely, feel homesick.

Smile?

Respect due for your self control. That had me chuckling long and hard.

Planes, Trains and Automobiles

For me, I'd have to go with Planes, Trains and Automobiles as my favourite. I love John Candy films too, so it's the best of both.

Also though, the films named above are fantastic as is The Lonely Guy, which I rarely hear mentioned.

And Three Amigos!

I've enjoyed his books too, I've read a couple of his novels and I'm currently reading Born Standing Up.

He's just brilliant.
