Stephen Duffy - A National Treasure

Sometimes we focus on negativity and I can be as guilty of this as the next man. Taking some time out from the heated debates elsewhere on the site can I just say that 'Memory and Desire' the Stephen Duffy 2 cd compilation is absolutely wonderful - easily one of the best compilation releases this year. I find it fairly incredible given the dearth of real talent in this country in recent years that Stephen is not a household name. His songwriting, playing and singing are a delight. At £8.98 on Amazon it is possibly one of the bargains of the year and the liner notes penned by him are almost as impressive as the music he makes.

Seconded...
Last year I purchased a Stephen Duffy CD (‘I Love My Friends’) in a charity shop inspired by a vague recollection from my youth of his ‘Kiss Me’ hit (under the name Tin Tin).
I was incredibly impressed - it has a lovely, honest, simple and direct feel to it plus great catchy tunes.
I moved on to his albums in the Lilac Time by which time I too was astounded this man wasn’t a household name.
Getting enthusiastic about new music discoveries seems to be a rare experience at my age so it's been a real pleasure chancing upon his work. Well done for highlighting a hidden treasure!
Support act
I saw him supporting the Barenaked Ladies a couple of years ago. It took me a couple of minutes to realise that his band were in fact the BNL themselves. They were in effect their own support act!
Where's Catlin Moran when you need her?
Mr Duffy was her lodger for several years. And used to drink lots of champagne.
Keep Going by SD and The Lilac Time is an album I love to listen to on a Sunday night. Just lovely.
He also wrote Faster Days by Velvet Crush, my favourite song on Teenage Symphonies To God.
We should comfort ourselves that he's probably had a reasonable payday c/o one Robert Williams of Stoke-On-Trent.
