Step away from the face paints sir, step away...

I've just been to buy the paper and spotted the new Q mag cover. It's REM time. Michael Stipe is there with the band and his big baldy head is covered brown/gold paint. Does anyone see this and think 'Oh look, Michael Stipe has painted his face gold, looks like a new exciting direction for the Athens, Georgia based trio'? Or do you, like me, just think 'Silly arse'?

they weren't the words I actually used but as this a family publication, they will do.
You should see the picture
You should see the picture of him inside the mag, where he is sitting on a radiator. He actually looks like a little monkey that got carried away with the contents of the toybox.
Brilliant.
Very funny. But does it make me want to buy the mag or hear the new album?
No. I prefer him in his smurf phase.
Same old same old
Did REM actually ever have an exciting direction? A new make-over each time they release an album doesn't make up up for what's been lacking all along...
Did they ever?
Yes. Before you could either see his face or decipher his words, interestingly. And long before he gave interviews.
Increasingly Stipe looks and talks like...
...the kind of superhero who might fly into a burning building and hand the trapped occupants a self-help book titled Putting out the flames: 10 proven life strategies for ending your codependent relationship with fire.
I saw it again this morning and I realised...
....that the new direction the Athens, Georgia based trio are heading in....soul music, Stipe has in effect gone blackface, well brownface.
O, you swedish stereotyper,
you!

The most interesting thing...
...about seeing REM at the KC Stadium in Hull in Hull a couple of years ago was the fact it was pissing down. This led to much speculation as to whether his make up would run during the gig. However, in a strange reflection of recent REM output, the anticipation turned to huge disappointment when it stopped raining just as they came on stage.
