Statues...

Formbyman's picture

I notice that Arsenal have unveiled 3 statues - Herbert Chapman (fair enough), Thierry Henry (if you like) and Tony Adams (fuck off - and it would have been more realistic if he'd only got his "offside arm" up).

Who, in your opinion (doesn't have to be football), deserves a statue, and where would you put it?

David Cameron

Right up his jacksie.

Football related

Not sure if I'm on my own here - but I'm uncomfortable about the trend of erecting statues of living footballers outside grounds.

Rightly or wrongly it's my belief that the person should have died before you start putting up statues - at least that way you filter out those who have made a lasting impression from those who are just riding the crest of popularity.

I couldn't believe that Thierry Henry has a statue, seriously ? has he made such a lasting impression for a club in existence for 125 yrs ?

Surprised

I would have thought they would have gone for Bergkamp if they wanted a recent player, and was surprised they went for 2 quite modern players. But as a neutral (Liverpoool supporter) I should say that I rate Henry the finest player I have seen play who was not wearing a Liverpool shirt - and that includes Cruyff. The two players I most wanted to be injured when they were due to play us are/were Henry and Drogba. Nothing personal - they just terrified me as a fan of the opposing team.

If we are building more statues it would probably be Paisley, Dalglish and Rush (in that order).

He is the club's

record highest ever goalscorer

Is he the

va-va-va-voom bloke ? And Nike shoes ?

If so then yeah - he's worth it !

In general I'd put up statues when the people are still alive - at least they'd get to see them.

Pathetic

Chapman fair enough but for the other two it's the monument equivalent of show boating on the pitch. Somehow, I don't think they'll remain untouched for long ......

Not sure I understand the negativity

Plenty of statues have been raised to individuals still alive to see them.

Sure, these wouldn't have been my first choices (Brady, Bergkamp, Henry, since you ask), but it's nice to commemorate great servants to the club and, in the case of Henry, to pay tribute to the finest player i've ever seen wear the shirt - and i've seen a few.

I don't recall similar comments being made against the recent unveiling of the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand at Old Trafford, and in that case the individual is still both alive and actually at the club (and fully merits the tribute).

I also don't think anyone batted an eyelid when we covered the outside of the stadium with 20ft tall images of the greatest Gunners of all time and fan testimonials about their greatness. It's called heritage and the fans love it - when we first arrived at the Emirates there were lots of complaints that the stadium was too "white label", and the club have been taking action to personalise it ever since: see also the Spirit of Highbury installation, the naming of the bridges and the pictures of fans and players everywhere.

Can't really see why it should bother anyone else, and it's hardly the equivalent of showboating. Would that more English clubs would show the same respect for their history.

I agree ...

... that if Adams has got one, Bergkamp should definitely get one (because he was a proper footballer) but that's the problem, when's it going to end? RVP's going to have to have one and what about Wrighty? and Wenger? You won't be able to get into the Emirates for bloody statues.

End in sight

Wenger already has a bust in the stadium lobby and has said he doesn't want a statue. Chapman, incidentally, has several busts around the stadium and of course back at Highbury, which is why I'd have bypassed him for the statue

Wright will never have a statue as he's slagged off the board and manager far too often since he left (still a legend though). He is, however, immortalised on the side of the stadium itself.

Van Persie can have whatever he wants if it'll make him sign a new contract.

The rumour amongst Arsenal fans this week have been that Bergkamp didn't get a statue because there's a hope at the club that one day he'll return as manager. He's currently learning the ropes at Ajax. No idea how that works with overseas games but if he's as intelligent a gaffer as he was a player then I say sign him up.

For the record..

It's not a direct criticism of Arsenal - the same could be levelled at a plethora of other clubs who have now started erecting similar tributes.

I am a United fan & I am certainly uncomfortable about both the renaming of the SAF stand & the forthcoming statue. I know that I'm not the only person that thinks all of that should have been delayed until his retirement at the earliest.

Furthermore I also think that the Holy Trinity statue (Best / Law / Charlton) is a touch premature.

In contrast, I am more than happy with the Busby one and also like the Dixie Dean one outside Everton.

Maybe it's just me - just find it strange to be erecting a statue to someone who hasn't yet reached 35 yrs old.

I understand that the new ground was never going to have the history of Highbury - it's something that is accumulated is it not ? or perhaps a statue of Tony Adams is the correct course of action - I dunno..

They could make it out of granite and it wouldn't be as hard as the real one.

Robert Cunninghame Graham

Founder of both main Scottish political parties (and one UK one).

First socialist MP, adventurer, writer.

Famous in Argentina, virtually unknown in his home country.

About time he had a statue, I'd say.

At BWFC

The Nat Lofthouse statue is already being chiselled, I believe.

I'd add Frank Worthington, Gudni Bergsson and Super John McGinlay.

I am more than happy

to provide statues of Eric Djemba-Djemba, Massimo Taibi and Colin Bell outside of Old Trafford.
