St John's Wood/Paddington Pubs

Philip Bryer's picture

Can anyone recommend a proper pub around London NW1/W2 which serves a decent ale and will be showing the Third Ashes Test on Sky?

There is NO SUCH THING

as a proper pub with a TV.

...OK...

...how about one with a shove ha'penny board where one might be able to take receipt of a telegram from a messenger boy?

Insufficiently endowed with entertainment paraphernalia.

The sort of ale house I frequent has an entire room devoted to shove ha'penny boards, with three arrayed on either side of the room, which connects via a small aperture to the bar. Anyone attempting to broach the premises to deliver unsolicited messages of any kind is given short shrift and shown the door. Independently operated communications apparatus of any kind may not pass the threshold, and musicians and singers are privileged to enjoy victuals funded by the landlord.

What

no bar billiards? No skittle alley? No bat and trap?

Johnny Come Lately embellishments

designed to part the foolish man from his money. Beer, tobacco, bread, cheese, pies and talcum powder are all a gentleman drinker requires before settling into a snug pew to enjoy the delights of the wandering minstrels arrayed before the bar. Picking crumbs from one's mutton chops and savouring the aftertaste of a fine stilton while polishing off the eighth or ninth foaming tankard of oh bollocks I can't be bothered any more.

In Paddington

most of the decent pubs don't have TVs and the ones that do have very small, top corner of the wall style goggle boxes - not ideal for watching sport on if that's your thing.

Decent ale wise, I can heartily recommend both The Mitre and The Victoria which are close to the station.

Allsop Arms - Marylebone

Decent enough boozer if memory serves - year or two since I've been.
Not outstanding but to while away an hour or two with a few beers/cricket on telly - fits the bill

Your mean they watch the cricket down there ?

I was down in That London last weekend, and tried to keep up with the cricket. Now considering England were winning, it was not on anywhere, at least in central London. Except, perversely, the Australian bar, which nonchalance was the order of the day...
