Squirrel Nut Zippers

May I take a moment of the Massive's collective time to introduce a band that may a couple of you are aware of, but unlikely the majority love and cherish. They are arguably one of the most enjoyable bands of the 90s. A band who blended jazz, blues, pop, klezmer, swing and weird voodoo skiffle into a unique blend of their own.

Forming in 1993, and splitting in 2001, they created a wonderful musical universe of their own, full of regret, longing, cellophane and saxophones. Obviously.

Whilst not my favourite band of all time, they are certainly worthy of note, being what I consider to be the most entertaining group. Whereas the usual form of musical entertainment in the 90s tended towards shuffling guitar groups or homogenised plastic pop groups, a bunch of North Carolina misfits pretending to be trapped in a 1930s cartoon providing its soundtrack was certainly a "different" angle.

As the group is planning another album for next year, I thought I would post their finest hour for a moment of quick digestion and ponderings. Plus, it has a superb video to boot.

Bloody excellent.

'Best Of' duly ordered. Only cost an unwell cephalopod too.

And this is one of my favourite Christmas songs...

'Grandma's on the fiddle, and Grandpa's got the bass'

I've got two...

... of their CDs. I haven't played either in years. Thanks for the reminder!

I bought their 'Hot' album for 50p...

...at the Saturday morning market in Chester-Le-Street about a decade ago.

It has been an occasional favourite of mine and Mrs Ghost's since.

Note: Violinist/Guitarist/Whistler extraordinaire (sp?) Andrew Bird was in their early line-up.

D'Oh

For a few seconds there I thought the video was an original '30s cartoon that the band had set music too. I was very impressed at how well the vocals synched with the characters' lip movements!
