Springwatch & The Smiths

Futurenoir's picture

Mrs Futurenoir and I really enjoy watching Springwatch on Beeb 2 in the evenings. This year, it is co presented by Chris Packham, as Bill Oddie is ill with a recurrence of his depression. Mr Packham is doing very well, I think. However, I noticed at the beginning of the week, during one of the links, he turned to co host Kate Humble and in response to one of her questions, replied "You just haven't earned it yet, baby." The next evening, he provided a voice over on some VT of new born chicks being fed and commented "It really is a case of bigmouth strikes again." And last night, whilst talking about bees, he commented "I've always wanted to know what happens to the hive when the queen is dead."

Is Mr Packham trying to shoehorn a Smiths song title into every edition of the programme? Anyone else see this?

Correct

He also threw in 'Vicar in a Tutu' whilst describing a gaily-plumed bird. Top programme all round. Bill Oddie is a huge Prince fan so maybe if he returns he'll slip 'Sexy MF' and 'Hide the Bone' into the conversation.

Packham is a top man!

(All due props to Oddie, of course.)

Kate Humble was utterly nonplussed when he threw "You just haven't earned it yet, baby" at her. (The amount of times I've tried to communicate with otherwise bright and clued-in girls via song lyrics and have crashed and burned... I smiled in mournful recognition...)

Jeff Stelling's been slipping some Throbbing Gristle titles into Countdown recently.

Ah memories of the meeting we got Cop show titles in

...some easy like what's The Bill for that - other's "I'm very warm in here - I could just eat a Magnum" were stretching it a bit.

Shearer, Hoddle, Southgate - crazy guys!!

And of course there was England's 1998 World Cup squad's attempts to insert song titles into all their interview answers. Sadly "Born To Lose" was not among those mentioned:

He was at it again this evening...

...managing to slip in "Oscillate Wildly", "Last Night I Dreamed Somebody Loved Me", and "This Charming Man". All perfectly in context, too. Mind you, this is a man who kept five live wasps' nests on coat hangers in his house, so he's probably an archetypal Smiths fan.

I think this is why he does it

Seeing this thread again on the letters page of the latest issue I remembered that Bill represented David Attenborough on some program where they tried to find Britains favourite living icon (or something). Oddie absolutely lambasted Morrissey who was another "finalist" along with Bowie i think. I cant find it on youtube but here is the prince of wails amusing response the night after the Oddie tirade.

Could there be a link? could Packham be playing subtle psychological warfare with the Oddie? I hope so. If he is a big Smiths / Moz fan then Oddie's comments may not have gone down well.
