Springsteen to headline Glasto

Fraser M's picture

Without having a pop at the Boss, is this not a rather disapointingly conservative choice after Jay-Z last year?

Especially given Neil Young is probably headlining one of the other nights.

Yeah.......

I'm sure he will put on a good show even if it's not to my taste. He is quite the entertainer, isn't he?

I'll certainly be in a different field, but I reckon he will do it justice.

Sorry is this some sort of

meta-joke post: a comment on the endless speculation especially about Neil Young always about to play Glasto? I think a festival that's been going for almost 40 years probably knows what they doing in choosing headline acts.

Sorry, not intended as a joke,

meta or otherwise.

I'm quite sure the Eavises know what they're doing booking Brooce and I'm quite sure he'll go down a storm being - and this *is* my point - a safe bet after Jay-Z proved to be controvertial last year and was regularly cited as a reason why it hadn't sold out ahead of time.

As for Neil Young, I was unaware of any endless speculation about him playing every year; along with Blur, he's being touted as the other headline act by multiple sources.

Damn, I thought it was a reformed Supertramp...

so I retain my Glastonbury virginity for another year...

I think it's superb

Possibly the best choice Eavis could make.

Completely "unBruce" like to play a large scale festival. It must appeal to him at this stage.

Do you think he'll "play some old"? Can't see the Glasto crowd getting down and dirty with Magic, Devils and Dust and the new one (name escapes me).

Would be a perfect point to wheel out the Seeger Sessions Band again. Perfectly married with Glastonbury!

Seeger Sessions - no chance !

Thats been, and gone, and was fantastic.

But it will be interesting to see how long his set is, and how its put together, given that the vast majority of the crowd will not be card-carrying Bruce-bores.
Unlike me.

Happy with Bruce / Neil Young - USA?

A while ago Michael Eavis stated that he had four headliners, "two from the UK and two from the USA", which the press have repeated a few times. Surely they should have ruled out Neil Young then, given that he's Canadian. I'd be over the moon if he was on though, saw him last year and it was fantastic.

I happy with Bruce, I like him and have never seen him live. I don't follow him closely enough to pay the amount he charges for his Enormo-Dome gigs, so this for me is ideal.

Ticket Madness To Ensue

Although it's been rumoured for a while that this would happen, Bruce has a massive following including many thousands who never miss a gig within flying distance, but I bet many of them didn't apply for Glastonbury tickets (long since sold out) "just in case". These people will go crackers now - what's the transferability of Glastonbury tickets like? If it's not limited, the resale market will go way more mental than usual.

It's very low nowadays

You have to imprint the card with full biometrics and face a retina scan every five hours or your wristband will explode.

10% of the tickets haven't been sold yet.

If you register by 31st March you can have a crack at buying from the last batch on April 5th.

Plus any returns from people

Plus any returns from people who paid the deposit back in October but didn't pay the rest.

Love Bruce and would travel (almost) anywhere to see him.

But would rather chop my ears off than go to Glastonbury! So Bruce, do the decent thing and play Sheffield for ****s sake!

Newcastle !

Wherever it is, the cities are supposed to be different from the last tour. And Harvey Goldsmiths site said to "watch out for news of other UK dates". Presumably, as he is not involved in promoting Hyde Park or Glastonbury, this was to get the announcement of them out of the way first.

Come on then!

Glastonbury Acts

I'd lay money on The Killers as one of the UK Headliners.

Lots of Rumours about Take That I'm led to believe.

playing some old

In Australia so I don't really care but I hope he doesn't play some old. The Devils and Dust album is superb; often forgotten entirely by the Springsteen club and actually could be a very useful 'in' for those who cannot get past (perhaps understandably)the damage caused by that massive commercial success of the two 'Born' albums. So if you are prepared to listen but worry about bombast try Devils and Dust.

Devils and Dust......

Up there with Human Touch as the worst album Bruce has committed to tape from my personal viewpoint.

My suggestion to anyone wanting an introduction to a Springsteen album without the bombast would be to point them in the direction of Nebraska, The Ghost of Tom Joad or my personal favourite, The Wild, The Innocent & The E Street Shuffle.

D&D to a non-believer would put them off for life!

naahhh

I like a stoush. Thing is, I can handle Human Touch. Think the title track is good - he clearly believes in it as he sings it. Lots of other OK things. Roll of the Dice is generic but fun. I like Soul Driver. Lucky Town I think is pretty dire - melodies are poor even by his journey man melody standards. I don't think he's ever been really great at actual tunes. Serviceable tunes at best. But D and D has better tunes, and I like the variation on his vocal delivery. I like the arrangements on D and D. I guess I like the thematic core of D and D. Nebraska is one of those great albums that takes commitment and work, while for me, Tom Joad is a just a little on the dull side. Even Dave Marsh, Springsteen brown tongue extraordinaire, feels that way about TJ. I like the title track and Youngstown but that's all. Wild is great of course so yeah - I guess a new comer could start there.
