SPOTIFY FRIDAY: You Are The DJ

Andrew Harrison's picture

Morning, Spotifiers. In what we believe is a first in rock and roll media, we're handing over the virtual decks on the WORD office to you, the reader. All day today (Friday 20th Feb) we're going to play the music you choose.

There's a collaborative Spotify playlist linked below, which you can add to and help build up. We'll play it all day and listen to whatever you select (and we'll choose our favourites for another, Best Of You Are The DJ list). And we'll be playing it on shuffle, so no need to worry if you get started late. Your track has just as much chance of being played as an early addition.

The Spotify list is here – click and it'll launch (as long as you've got Spotify). If you need to download Spotify, it's available here.

And of course, you can play the list via your own computer and assess the musical taste of the WORD Hive Mind yourself.

THE RULES
1] Post one track at a time. No complete albums or huge runs of a single artist – we'll delete them.
2] There are no other rules.

We'll be tweeting our reactions here so you can see what we think of the tracks as they play. And you can monitor exactly what we're playing right now via the miracle of our Last.fm page, which will be scrobbling the tracks live.

Comments welcomed below, of course, or sign up to Twitter and stick your oar in live and direct. The Spotify list is live NOW so let the uploading of Blackout Crew and New Riders of the Purple Sage rareities commence!

At work

No spotty on NHS net.
Why don't you just play the covers list end to end? You know you want to.

Feel left out.

me too

Curse that firewall. Knew I should have worked at home today.

However, streaming last fm is possible, so I can choose some stuff from the Word's 'recently listened' page to listen to. E.g. Mayor of Simpleton, fabulous, haven't heard it in years etc.

Some early Tweet highlights:

Nebuchanezer: That is tempting fate isn't it? you could be subjected to the complete works of Bros

JonathanDeamer: No Zwan on Spotify :-(

jonthemonkey: Sweet! Great idea. Hope you enjoy Tom Lehrer.

HPWonderful: Please stop this. I had planned to some some productive work today and now that's all gone out the window

I`m new to this...

Just joined the Spotify revolution after Andrew raving about it in the Podcast. This is going to open up an amazing amount of music to me that I wouldn`t otherwise listen to. iTunes must be a bit worried, though. This is just brilliant, I will spread the word, sorry...The Word. Thanks Andrew!

On todays playlist I especially like Bill Fay, Rufus Wainwright, Praga Khan so far. I`ll just leave it to play all day and evening.

Extremely chuffed...

at the love being shown for The Word Girl.

In the past Mrs turnitoffmum has been known to leave the room when that comes on.

I no longer feel alone!

complement returned

As mentioned above I'm one of the Spotify-deprived while at work, so had been listening at one remove via the Word's last fm page.

That's a bit manual though so I'm now listening to The WordMagazine's Library. Excellent stuff so far though I was a bit taken aback by Vangelis.

Right now it's Weissensee by Neu!, which is well ambient.

sidetracked...

.. by Big Audio Dynamite. I'd completely forgotten about them. I loved the first two LPs. The lo-fi, not-quite-right feel of the music is quite unique.

Has anyone actually paid for Spotify? Surely they can't be making any money out of the ads in the UK version.

does it show you anywere

who added what, which be interesting and it might stamp rick rolling and ironic addition of mrs mills et al?

0
Chris G | 21 February 2009 - 12:46pm

I'll put my hand up....

...and admit to adding "Your Sister Cried" by Mary Gauthier.

It's a Fred Eaglesmith song and Fred doesn't show up on Spotify. I was listening to a Fred tribute cd at the time.

Wimoweh...

...was mine. No irony intended, a wonderfully demented record.
