SPOTIFY FRIDAY goes random: today it's 1988

Andrew Harrison's picture

Smiley shirts, pirate eye-patches and "Mrs Mills" at the ready. Continuing the random theme of Spotify Friday, today we alight on the annus mirabilis that was 1988. Click on the link to launch Spotify and add your favourites from the year the Soviets pulled out of Afghanistan, Rain Man won three Oscars and the whole Satanic Verses thing kicked off.

THE RULES
1] One track at a time. Please don't dump entire albums on there. We will only delete them.
2] Please bear your fellow listeners in mind and don't foist your "difficult" favourites, obscure b-sides or 28-minute cosmic freakouts on them.

We're building a year-by-year database of the best music as chosen by the WORD massive. The 1975 list is now closed to new additions but we will be doing other years at random in the weeks to come.

In the meantime - what's the worst year for pop music? I'm voting for 1992.

Hooray!

What a year! I turned 14 and started buying CDs. CDs! I brought my personal CD player (made by Citizen, yeah, the watch people) into school so people could see what one looked like. Good. Times.

Although most of the music I bought in 1988 was not from 1988.

...as for 1992

Possibly true, it was rescued from the doldrums by Suede...

May I politely suggest...

that if we do this we check the release dates of records? There are several songs on this list that aren't from 1988. It sort of defeats the purpose of doing it if the year is wrong, does it not?!

I agree

Which ones are out of date ?

Well for starters...

Sweet Child O' Mine by Guns N' Roses - 1987

Everywhere by Fleetwood Mac - 1987

Faith by George Michael - 1987

also Somewhere Down The Crazy River was originally released on the 'Robbie Robertson' album in 1987 but was a hit in 1988. So that one is a bit harder to pin down to a year.

I'm sure Andrew will fix them

(I'm relieved that none of them are mine - I did check, because it was a long time ago, we've all blown up a lot of bridges since then. Well I certainly have)

I agree it would be better if everyone contributing made sure that the selection belongs in the year

Good one, Patrick

I refrained from including anything from Roy Orbison's Mystery Girl; even though Orbison died in December 1988 having just finished recording it, the album was released, if memory serves, in January 1989.

FM's Everywhere was a hit in

FM's Everywhere was a hit in 1988, it was all over that year, but the parent album did come out in 1987. I'd keep it on the 1988 list meself.
