Spot The Difference

Interesting to note that Percy still appears to be up to his old tricks ;-)

"Central Two Oh Nine" is a track from the latest album, and jolly nice it is too. "Built around a studio jam" according to the man's own website and - I think - credited to Plant and co-producer Buddy Miller.

So, compare, contrast and discuss - The Boggs 'How Long' (2002) and Plant's 'Central 209' (2010).

How about this:

That's pretty damn similar

And looking at the video clip of Robert's song on YouTube, some of the comments point out it also sounds a lot like this:

Brazen Percy

This is the musical equivalent of cutting and pasting from Wikipedia for an essay, isn't it.

I apologise

For any unintentional similarities between my post and Fraser M's *points up* :-)

At least

you acknowledged where you'd found the info; I just did a Percy...

Well it was one of the very few times in life

when a salient point has been made in the YouTube comments section!

trad. arr.

It's a traditional tune, no idea what it's called but I can play it on the banjo.

There *are* uncanny similarities between the exact arrangements on a couple of the examples above, not necessarily Percy's.

There's definitely...

a more than generous slosh of Ry Cooder in there as well. I can't remember the song - Long Riders soundtrack era, maybe?

Aaaaaaah...

This according to the band's own press...

"We Are The Boggs We Are (Arena Rock Recording Co.) was a re-telling of Harry Smith’s Anthology of American Folk Music that the band mockingly dubbed ‘Archival no-wave’."

I've long since sold my CD copy so can't check on the credits, but if the above is anything to go by it at least they didn't do "a Percy".

However, I've trawled through the entire Anthology track by track on Spotify and can't find the trad.arr "inspiration". This is annoying me now...

I think

It might be Dock Boggs?

0
Mavis Diles | 27 October 2010 - 1:21pm

Shouldn't I be working?

Suspect you're right - it's got that stripped down, eery round-and-round feel of one of his. But it's neither of the two DB tracks on the Anthology, unfortunately.

Come on, we can *do* this! Are we not anoraks!?!

(still stunned by the cheek of ol'Perce, though... it really is a straight lift)

I think pt. 2

It's one of the tracks on the Smithsonian-Folkways anthology of Dock Boggs. I don't have it to hand though.

Lyrics

Are based on a song by Lightnin' Hopkins.

Tune... Still not sure.

Trad.arr my ar...

I've trawled through DB's entire output available on Spurtify and can't find anything even vaguely similar, but don't doubt you're feeling that it's based on a rave from the traditional grave.

That said, Plant & Co stands guilty of ripping off The Boggs' arrangement pretty much note-for-note - difficult to argue otherwise. And Jason Friedman's voice is better.

Go revisit the excellent 'We Are The Boggs We Are' -- it knocks Plant's cod blues-grass back into next week.

The Boggs

How did I miss these guys? Excellent.

I think it might be..

the one that goes "The cuckoo is a pretty bird" the banjo sounds very similar.
