Spoon

DrJ's picture

I thought I was too old to have a band change my life, again, but I love Spoon. I've noticed some passing interest on the board but the news this week that they have a new album out in January and I'm here to gauge interest and drum up support.

I only got into them about three years ago because of a fleeting mention from Adam Buxton that they were his favourite band. Their last album Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga from 2007 is possibly my album of the decade. They rock, they use the studio in an interesting way, and the music is spare but complex. And they have tunes! Tunes! TUNES!

Here's my suggested sampler song, Don't Make Me A Target:

Who are they like? There are some Costello comparisons: You hear non-rock song words together in a surprising way ("Clubs and sticks and bats and balls/for nuclear dicks with dialect drawls/they come from a parking lot town/where nothing lives in the sun"). The drummer, Jim Eno, is very like Pete Thomas in terms of inventiveness and playing to the singer. And this video, for Sister Jack, apes the Oliver Army vid:

So, Spoon, let's go people!

great band

very underated and ga ga ga is also one of my most played albums on the pod. Saw them live on a US trip couple of years back supporting Beck and they were great, in fact they seemed to have as much support there as Beck. Looking forward to the new album and hopefully they'll come over and play live.

Saw them live in Houston

On the same bill as The New Pornographers.

They were excellent live, lots of energy.

Ga ga ga is one of my favourite albums of the past few years, not a bad track on it. The Underdog is fantastic

Hope they start getting the recognition they deserve.

Ta

Ooh, thanks for that. There's a free interview with them on the NPR All Songs Considered podcast this week too. I went intothe shops thinking the album was out yesterday, was disappointed until I realised there was a new Eels record.
