Intelligent Life On Planet Rock
Spooks - Episode broadcast 18/11/09 - Post Contains Spoiler!
Are there any members of special forces, the police, intelligence experts or general know it alls (surely not here!) who can explain to me what the flop was going on with the plot of Spooks last night? Holes bigger than one of those really holey cheeses from Europeland.
Now, I like Spooks, let me say that from the outset. And that is my problem to deal with, but...
1) Why did the Baader Meinhof wannabees not post a guard / lookout before disappearing into the panic room?
2) How did Lucas stroll into the palacial gaff of a Russian billionaire without meeting a single lock, alarm or semi-automatic toting man-mountain?
3) Finally, and most importantly, why wasn't Jo - who had been sent, armed, to investigate a security breach - wearing a Kevlar vest? She deserved a better death scene.
Haven't they seen 24?

Ahem
I haven't caught up with this yet and had no idea what happened in Point 3. Care to edit the OP to avoid any plot spoilers for anyone else?
Very sorry.
I did put the episode date up in my defence, and made it clear in my opening remarks that I was discussing the plot.
Have changed it.
That's ok!
I'm not even that big a Spooks fan (it's not like trying to avoid the football result), just thinking others out there might be.
I think IanP's suggestion (which I see you've incorporated) is the way to go.
Indeed.
Wasn't thinking.
It's funny - I wouldn't normally have bothered posting about it, but it's usually quite a tightly written show (some obvious holes, occasionally). I know it's 'only a TV show' but... well, you know, it sets itself up as 'classy' which it is, and then makes me go (three times in one episode) WHAT THE ...?
Even Mrs.Adman (who likes the show too) - not normally bothered by that kind of thing - had to agree that something was up with this episode. Usually she'd shrug, tell me to calm down / get a life, and then get on with her life.
Does it matter? Not really. Will I continue to watch? Hell yeah. Even a dodgy episode of Spooks is better than 90% of TV output.
Glad I didn't mess up your viewing too badly. :-)
My sympathies,
no doubt that's annoying, it's happened to me. But rather than delete, perhaps a 'spoiler alert' note at the top may be more appropriate, otherwise TV shows and films will never get discussed as there will always be someone who hasn't seen the topic in question?
It's a work of fiction...
If they stuck to the rules there'd be no story. It's a bit of artistic license going on, I think.
However, didn't Harry say that they couldn't get back up because officially this meeting did not exist?
I know... :-)
See my post above.
It's only a TV show - quite correct.
But if you've got time to crack open the handguns, surely you've got time to put on a bullet proof vest?
Holes in the plot?
I watched Spooks in its early days and found the plot holes too vast for me to continue watching. I've seen odd bits here and there over the years and it's just as holey as it was in the beginning.
I want narrative coherence. Saying it's a work of fiction doesn't hold water with me. I think it should have a structure that holds together.
I've always thought
that it's charm is that it is full of holes. It's utterly fanciful. The real MI5 is nothing like that (so I'm told). I enjoy the fantasy of it all.
So you are told, eh?
That 'Five' in your name isn't significant then?
Cheap telly though isn't it?
Two rented locations. A few split screens and wizzy bang graphics. No long term contracts for the actors.
Agree the plot has gaping holes but I don't really care when I'm splumped in front of it on a Wednesday night.
Jo was something of a cardboard character anyway and nearly went at the end of the season before last when we were all supposed to think Adam had suffocated her.
Still admire the way they don't mind who gets bumped off - it maintains a semblance of jeopardy - especially when they stray near hot chip fryers as did Lisa Faulkner in season 1 episode 1.
At the end I was sitting there just thinking...
Head shot! At that range go for the head shot - quicker, cleaner nad less chance of giving him time to pull his little trigger!
Mind you, as PHR says below you do have to admire their willingness to off a lead character without making it some big heroic, melodramatic gesture. The frying tonight scene in series one was a real statement of intent (and genuinely shocking too). Similarly getting rid of the other techno bod in the forest, having Zafar basically just vanish while off on an unnamed op somewhere, Connie shivving (?sp) Ben without compunction...
Of course, the effect was exactly what they wanted... a couple of weeks ago my wife and I were practically yelling at the screen, "Don't you DARE kill off Malcolm!"
Yep. We had that Malcolm moment too!
Head shot. Exactly. If we can think of it (well, you thought if it...) why can't they? (The writers.) Still plenty of scope to write in a good death scene for Jo.
