Spiral III

Carl Parker's picture

There may be some wondering how you're going to fill your Saturday nights after the final episode of The Killing airs in 3 weeks time.

Well postpone those worries for a few more weeks yet because, after a break of about two years, the French thriller series Spiral (or Engranages if you prefer) has been lined up to take its place in the 9:00 pm slot on BBC4.

Hopefully we'll once again see Laure Berthaud cross swords with the sexiest lawyer in the western world, Josephine Karlsson. We can anticipate that Gilou will be as chaotic as he has been in the past and his colleagues will have to find ways to bail him out. Fitoussi will reappear so that Mrs P can indulge herself lusting after him as I do after Ms Karlsson. And of course we want Roban to pierce all and sundry with that devastating stare.

If you've not seen Spiral both series I and II are available on DVD and well worth catching up on. But its not essential to have seen them before series III. We saw II first and then caught up with I on DVD.

More superior television on BBC4.

Not to menshun....

...that Wonders Of The Universe started last night. I suspect we're going to start seeing a Brian Cox Backlash (TMFTL) soon, because he's been far too loved for far too long, but my god, this was amazing TV.

It's fair to say I've not looked forward to the start of a TV series so much since, well, a very long time ago.

Return of Spiral - Splendid News

I'm not sure why this hasn't garnered the same level of critical attention as the Killing as its an equally absorbing piece of drama. should appeal to those of us who will be missing pour weekly fix from Copenhagen.

Great news

The last episode of series II was some of the most gripping TV I can remember.

Zen

has been cancelled, sadly. It might not have been everyone's cup of espresso, but I quite enjoyed it. I'll have to read the books.

Zen failed

to capture the true complexity of the novels, especially the ever present menace of state, church, mafia and freemasonry cabals.
Initially I was really looking forward to the fourth book, Dead Lagoon, set in Venice, which is one of my favourite books of all time. As it turned out, they would never have done it justice, so I was glad it was left to someone else.
The series was all too slick and altogether too good looking on all levels. It kind of was Wallander crossed with Hustle, and not in a good way. It did no service to the books.
Zen is more shlubby than Rufus Sewell was allowed to play it. Aurelio is really an anti-hero in the books.
Sorry, I love the books very much.
Actually, the Zen books would benefit from the Spiral treatment 6-8 well written shows, with all the action, all the plots within plots explained fully. As opposed to careering to an unnecessarily hasty dénouement.

Saturday 2nd April, BBC4

I'm trying to make up my mind as to whether what the BBC is doing is a good thing or not in that as with The Killing we are getting it in 2 episode chunks.

So we get more per helping, but obviously the series ends in half the time. There's also the health issue - there was so much tension in one of the latter episodes of Spiral II that I'm not sure I'd be ready for a second helping straight away. Assuming of course it achieves those heights again.

Anyway here's a picture of the divine Audrey Fleurot as the wicked lawyer Josephine Karlsson ready to do battle with les flics in court, for you to be getting on with for the moment.

Not seen this

I taped the first series and then deleted it without watching it because I had so much on my Sky+, but I fully intend to watch this then catch up if necessary.

Good start

A very different atmosphere compared to Spiral II.

Will Clement go over to the dark side? If I could work with Ms Karlsson I'd be tempted.
