Spanish Summer

Charlie Gordon's picture

Can you imagine England ever achieving what Spain have done this summer? World Cup, Wimbledon and Tour de France. And not content with that, this is how good their under 19 footballers are:

I had to look a couple of times

to see what he actually did. Scoring with his trailing leg not only highly skilful but demanded a huge amount of confidence.
Mind you Emile Heskey could do that no problem

Saw this live on TV

and couldn't believe it at first. Took a couple of replays to suss what he'd done.
Wonder how much practice it took?

Tour De France

Although Contador is a Spaniard, he rides for a Khazakstani team in which most of the riders are Khazaks. He wouldn't have won without the support of his team.

Khazaks

There were only 2 Khazaks in the Astana team compared with 5 Spaniards. I don't think Contador got all that much support from his team - Vinokourov and Navarro maybe. I reckon he would have won whichever team he was in, because in the end it was the individual time trials that made the difference.

Don't forget.....

....the Spanish are also the reigning World Basketball Champions and that Jorge Lorenzo is running away with the Moto GP title.

Has any single country ever had this much sporting success at one time? I just hope to God that Alonso doesn't come through to take the Formula 1 crown, as the level of bragging amongst my Spanish friends has already been turned up to 10.
