South Coast Post-Punk

What's it called?:
Messthetics #108 South Coast DIY
What It Sounds Like:
Eclectic, odd, mod and eerie sounds from the black and white post-punk period of 1979-1981. Some bands on this amazing compilation lean towards the ,er, post-modern deconstructive side of pop (hmmm) while others try very hard to be the Gang of Four or (in the case of the Thought Police) The Jam. It's a very mixed lucky bag of fun. In fact it sounds like every local gig you ever went to.
What Does It All "Mean"?:
Chuck Warner has been compiling British punk and post-punk for his Hyped2Death label for years, and #108 is in a series of regional compilations. Chuck deserves an article in this magazine now!
Goes well with...:
A very good Bordeaux, to remind you that you no longer have to stand in a sea of lager ever ever again.
Might Suit People Who Like...:
...the sights, sounds and smells of that time...Chuck's notes are extensive, tracking down band members and publishing rare photos. These compilations rekindle the time and place perfectly.
