Soundtracks that you have forgotten about

MatDavies's picture

whilst skulking (and believe you me you do skulk) around my local Zaavi (sorry) I picked up a copy of Mogwai's sublime, mysterious, dark and utterly captivating soundtrack to "Zidane- a 21st century portrait", the excellent documentary of the best football player there's ever been (in my 'umble opinion).Shamefully this soundtrack passed me by and it got me wondering whether there were other lost gems out there that I should skulk around for?

My favourite

soundtracks are Local Hero by Mark Knopfler, and One from the Heart by Tom Waits. Both wonderful.

Stand by Me obviously

Ferris Buellers Day Off had great tunes but no soundtrack...

Michael Nyman

The Draftsman's Contract is seven tracks of up-tempo rocked up classical bliss. And A Zed And Two Noughts is also good.

Also the soundtrack to "Me, You and Everyone We Know"

Good ambient electronic music.

Apartment Hunting

Mary Margaret O'Hara does the music, and it's some compensation for the lack of a Miss America follow up.

M2 O'H

It's a bit patchy, though isn't it? I recall one track that I have to skip because it is just so bad. It's one of her 'crazy' songs.

Never seen the film. Having read about it, I don't think I want to, either.

Off centre request:

Rather than soundtracks per se, written for the film, I enjoy the occasional gem of a song that can appear within a film, yet seemingly no where else. These are cover versions produced solely for or on a film soundtrack and there are many such examples. The Shrek ones are well known and the soundtracks are easily available, but I occasionally discover an occasional diamond by chance, whilst browsing for other content.Sometimes in the cruddiest of films suddenly pops up the most unlikely cover version. Is there a website or equivalent that aggregates film songs or songs included within films to one source of discovery? Tapping "various artists" into i-tunes power search is most unproductive, I find.

I too would like some sort of guide like that

You may have it already but the soundtrack to "The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou." has Portugese versions of David Bowie songs.
I've never seen the film but I own the cd.
Among others
Rebel Rebel
Starman
Life on Mars?

All sung by Seu Jorge. Any similar recommendations?

So Seu Me

There's also an album featuring just Seu Jorge/Bowie tracks, featuring a load more songs that didn't appear on the soundtrack album. It's very good.

This just in....

OK, it's been languishing in the pile in the glove compartment* of my car, so I have only just got around to it, bar the song on the cover disc a month or 3 back. This should actually be a compulsory listen, especially if you subscribe to current de rigeur affectation that Bowie is no more than an advantageous flitterbegibbeting magpie. Stripped to accoustic guitar and almost entirely in portuguese, this LP actually confirms the thoroughly decent tunes and song structures the Dame actually employed. It's true, most of the songs are 30+ years old Hunkydory/Ziggy/Aladdin vintage, but, in truth, that is no bad set to be remembered by. This is a lovely LP, with the fun of recognition bringing a big smile, usually fairly swiftly, to the face. After a crap day at the orifice yesterday, it certainly began to lift me up. True, at times, it hints toward care in the community subway singing, particularly as "Rock'n'roll Suicide" draws to its climax, but, hey, ain't that the charm of it? Please, surprise yourself. BTW, the coverdisc Suffragette City is perhaps the weakest song, so don't write this off on the basis of that experience.
(*Anyone actually keep gloves in their cars anymore?)

In-car Gloves

It takes ages for the heater to get going in my '89 Mazda, so: yes, gloves are essential in winter. (Though I keep them indoors for that chilly journey down the steps...)

*Edit* I realise I've somewhat missed the point of your comment, Retro, but why let irrelevance stand in the way of a fatuous interjection? It's what the interweb is for...

NB

I feel today's additions should've been headed "Threads that you have forgotten about."

0
nigelthebald | 3 April 2009 - 9:17am

It's great, innit!

I think old mails should be revived in this way and that it should be every bloggers task to find an old trail and reply to it.
(Coming soon: Western Swing, new fangled fad or likely to last?)

Yeah, I love it!

It was particularly enjoyable when it became apparent how long ago this thread had started...

The 'Sideways' soundtrack seems to have passed by

relatively unnoticed.
It is in turn breezy, groovy, sad and melancholic and seems to hark from another time.
The bourgeois in me is coming out but this is perfect for sitting in the garden on a summers day with a wine or two.

I still stand by the post but it was 8 months ago!

Tindersticks "Trouble Every Day"

I don't have the cd, but I recall the soundtrack to "Trouble Every Day" by Tindersticks was very good.

(Was too fussed on the film though.)

Re Mogwai

I watched that documentary on BBCIPlayer a while back it was very good. Your blog reminded me of a Mogwai gig a couple of years ago. It was at the Albert Hall. A couple sat next to me and I got the drift that the guy knew Mogwai but the girl who may of been on a date with him did not. Mogwai were doing their usual thing starting very melodic and calm and then blasted into a heavy section which nearly took the roof off. The girl obviously wasn't expecting this and nearly fell out of her chair! She quickly composed herself but I had to do all I could not to laugh. I always wondered whether he ever saw her again!

Manhattan

Soundtrack to the Woody Allen movie. The recording of Rhapsody in Blue is ravishing.

And while we're talking Woody, the soundtrack to "Everyone Says I Love You" is an idiosyncratic favourite - you don't get the opportunity to hear Alan Alda sing all that often. Nor Woody. Nor Goldie Hawn. Nor Drew Barrymore - I'm a dreamer, Montreal...

If these dont set you up for the weekend, there's no hope.
