Sounds of the 60s

Beany's picture

Most radio presenters with a show featuring music from a particular decade will slap on any old random hits from that period. Not so the master of all popular music from the 1960's.

Brian Matthew's show is essential listening for anyone with an ear for great and obscure music from an era when, well, pop music began. He was slap bang in the middle of the music scene back then and still retains an encyclopedic knowledge of the time without ever seeming to show-off.

Try to catch his show on the BBC iPlayer (UK only). Here are two tracks he played consecutively today (I think). Marvellous.

It's a great show...

...and Matthew has one of the greatest-ever radio voices, but the real genius behind Sounds of the Sixties is Phil 'The Collector' Swern, seen here on the left with Whispering and Fluff.

Not to be confued with that other collector Phil Smee.

its a great radio show

There's always something interesting, something unusual.

I listen most Saturdays - then catch up with Danny Baker via the podcast

I made a compilation for an old mate's

birthday last week. Thought I'd stick this on as it's quite rare.

Brian played it this morning. Both men should be made Vice Sea Lords for their services to saturday morning radio.

A great show to ease us all into the weekend

Apparently it has a higher listener share than any other UK radio show, and I think we've suggested here before that Mr. Matthew would make a great interviewee for the magazine.

As Beany says in his original post, "He was slap bang in the middle of the music scene back then" - the "Bowie At The Beeb" collection is a personal favourite, and hearing Brian (and Peely of course) introducing those original shows is priceless stuff.
