Sound The Same Singers
Posted by David Wright on 4 May 2011 - 10:28am.
I’ve recently been listening to the new Elbow album and although it’s been stated before, Guy Garvey’s voice is not that far removed from Peter Gabriels, particularly on the excellent title track, Build A Rocket Boys.
It seems like the opportunity for a thread, you could also put Freddie Mercury next to Mika and Thom Yorke next to Matt Bellamy from Muse. Which other singers sound the same?

Duffy
and Orville the Duck
I've always thought that...
...Al Stewart...
...and Neil Tennant...
...are soundalikeys.
Actually, I was listening to
The Year Of The Cat album last week and thought that Al Stewart's voice sounded rather like Stephen Duffy!
Got the first three Al Stewart LPs.........
.....'67, '69 and '70 and I simply can not listen to any of them due to the similarity with....erm.....The Pet Shop Boys.
Curiously, from memory, his '66 single doesn't sound anything like.....erm.....The Pet Shop Boys.
Best to just stick with that.
Nickelback
Creed, Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park etc etc.
They all share the same singer.
Well, they don't, do they?
I realise they're all terrible bands that make similar-sounding music, but that doesn't mean the vocal stylings of all the frontmen are the same. As a start, two sing and two (sort of) rap. For what it's worth:
- Creed's Scott Stapp sounds a bit like Eddie Vedder
- Nickelback's Chad Kroeger sounds a bit like Kurt Cobain
- Limp Bizkit's Fred Durst sounds a bit like a twelve year old who's been sent to his room without any dinner
- Linkin Park's Chester Bennington sounds a bit like an angry man who didn't get enough hugs when he was growing up
Yes of course
you're right. I was generalising wildly and my prejudice was showing.
Have an up for attention to detail above and beyond the call of duty.
Correction.
Chad Kroeger sounds a bit like someone applying a tattoo of kicks to the scrotum of Michael Ball.
Chester Bennington sounds like Michael Cera's long-lost twin who likes to imagine he's Dave Pelzer, but was actually adopted by a stockbroker.
Sprout
I always used to mix up Deacon Blue and Prefab Sprout as well.
That singer out of
Gene and Morrissey; taking hero worship just a bit too far.
Yes, I think that Martin Rossiter
Sounded even more like Moz in interviews etc, even the kind of words he used. I remember reading his top 10 favourite songs and he didn't even have The Smiths in there. Come on!
Thom Yorke and Matt Bellamy? Really?
One sounds like a perpetually bored cyborg fascinated by nature and politics.
The other sounds like a eunuch/hamster cross breed in mortal fear of being abducted by aliens working for the CIA.
Completely different.
But for hippety hop fans, I would add two of its current successes:
Waka Flocka Flame
Lil Wayne
Both of whom sound extremely stoned and lazy. They're mumbling not rapping. -40 points all round.
Amusing
Point taken with latter day Muse and Radiohead, but when the former’s first album came out, I thought they really did sound like Radiohead, I think that was the general opinion at the time, but I guess it’s all down to your listening preferences.
I always get confused...
...between Ol' Dirty Bastard and Petula Clark. It's uncanny.
not to mention
Richard Butler
(he of The Psychedelic Furs) seemed to model his entire vocal style on Lodger-era David Bowie.
Not to mention
Gary Numan
Ian McCulloch - Echo & the Bunnymen
who also sound like Bowie.
Don't forget
Brett Anderson who also does a good Bowie impression.
And since much of Bowie's career has consisted of variations on the Anthony Newley theme almost any Mockney - even Lily Allen and Kate Nash - but particularly Damon Albarn.
Monica Queen from Thrum
And early Lone Justice era Maria McKee
I have always thought that too
Plus they are both great
David Sylvian
and Bryan Ferry
Bryan Ferry...
...and Larry the Lamb.
In that case
Bryan Ferry and Marc Bolan - both a little sheepish.
Aloe Blacc
sounds uncannily like Bill Withers.
And Beth Gibbons does a mean Billie Holiday.
Not just me thats noticed
the Garvey/Gabriel similarity (TMFTL?)
Similar sounding singers: Mick Jagger & David Johansen
One for the 50 somethings.
1972 IIRC - Blackfoot Sue - Standing in the road - I always thought that the singer sounded like Noddy Holder.
Me too
and don't you think the singer on New Radicals 'You get what you give' sounds suspiciously like World Party's Karl Wallinger?
Thank God
Nobody's ever tried to 'sing' like Kevin Rowland
Eddie Vedder
and Pingu
Pingu's a rapper.
The bloke from The Dears sounds more like
Britwimp Damon Allbran than you might expect a large black Canadian oughta..
Also. I've long held the view that Editors and Wild Beasts should stop kidding themselves and re-brand as the - respectively - Joy Division and Associates tribute bands they were destined to be...
voice connections
Chris Rea sounded a bit like Mark Knopfler who used to sound a bit like Bob Dylan who now sounds more and more like Tom Waits.
Meanwhile, over in heavy rock land Marc Storace (Krokus) deliberately sounded like Bon Scott who has since inspired the lead singers of new Aussie Jack Daniels swigging rockers Airbourne and Belfast rockers The Answer.
most heavy metal singers try to imitate David Coverdale, Ronnie Dio, Paul Rodgers or Robert Plant. But they all fail.
and no one sings like Lemmy!
A couple of obvious ones, plus...
Rumer - Karen Carpenter
Madeleine Peyroux - Billie Holiday
Tracy Chapman - Joan Armatrading
Vikki Clayton - Sandy Denny
Rufus Wainwright - a constipated camel
How can you say that about Rufus, you tin-eared ignoramus!
His voice is that of a constipated llama. Camels have too much tonal variation.
It's not a fish
The lead singer from Noah and the Whale reminds me of the lead vocalist from Deacon Blue.
Rod Stewart
And Bonnie Tyler. They had the same hair as well.
Rob Dougan = Chris Rea
I suppose there is some resemblance
between Gabriel and Garvey (four letters at least). I can see it, but hearing 'Don't Give Up' on radio 2 the other day I have to say Gabriel really does have a tremendous voice, not that I'm keen on Genesis, whereas Garvey is comparatively unimpressive. Gabriel really has a raw, gutsy, soulful Steve Winwood-ish power he can draw on when he needs it - quite a tough edge to it - whereas Garvey does seem rather consistently soppy to me. I really don't like Elbow mind. Not that this observation/opinion should detract from the thread.
Anyway, Morrissey does evoke the chap from The Swans somewhat I would say.
Conor 'Bright Eyes' Oberst and Conor 'Villagers' O'Brien.
They even look the same. Spooky.
