Songs you like despite having absolutely no idea what they're about
Posted by Mousey on 13 December 2009 - 5:42am.
I read somewhere recently that this song's title comes from the name of a Chinese dish of chicken and eggs. And that much of the song is about when his dog got run over. That information doesn't really make the song any more comprehensible - but somehow that doesn't matter, I still really like it - catchy as hell, great to sing along to, great band and arrangement, etc etc.

Most of
David Bowie's hits.
Salamanda Palaganda - Marc
One of John Peel's favourites...and mine.
Nearly everything I like
Nearly everything I like probably.
The entire...
... Steely Dan catalogue
This bit of wonderful nonsense fits the bill
Also includes my favourite spoken word interlude on any record
The way it is
By Bruce Hornsby. Listened to this for years, and of course it was a theme on Grandstand. Eventually I listened to the words and found out it was not just a nice piano driven thing but an empassioned critique of racism in the USA. Whoda thunk?
BTW if you don't understand Steely Dan, there is an online dictionary to explain who a Bodhisatva is. Well I never knew that either.
Ditto
on Mother and Child Reunion, No idea what´s it about
Counting Crows have a number of songs like this...
... but, in particular, can I point out "Rain King"? If this ever comes on the radio, or turns up on the iPod whilst a-shuffling, I find myself bellowing along with it (usually the harmony parts - just within my paltry reach), but the words - I haven't a Scooby.
"Henderson is waiting for the sun", "...in the belly of a black winged bird", "I belong in the service of the Queen".
Arrant nonsense or high-brow literature - you decide!!
A Song for Europe - Roxy Music
Meaningless in any language - especially foreign ones. But magnificent and preposterously perfect
