Songs of Teenage Angst and Rebellion
Posted by Retro Man on 20 April 2011 - 10:58pm.
Not only did I discover from watching the Runaways movie the other night that Cherie Currie is now "Chainsaw Chick" (see here for that http://www.wordmagazine.co.uk/content/chainsaw-chick-rock-stars-and-thei...) but it also reminded me that Joan Jett is responsible for my all time favourite "It's sooo unfair, toys out the pram" song of Teenage rebellion.

I may be missing the point . .
. . no . . I'm sure I'm missing the point but this came on the iPod this morning just before I got into the office and I walked in feeling 17 again -
Not at all...
You can have a great Teenage Angst song such as yours (or the ultimate "My Generation" I guess)...either that or a really naff one as JoLean puts forward below, no rules yah!
Being very loud
Not my favourite, but the Toyah lyric from 'I Want To Be Free' always makes me hoot when I hear it (roughly once every eight years).
"I'm going to crawl through the alleyways, being very loud"
Yeah, Toyah! Being very LOUD! That'll show the parents and squares! Let's have a loud revolution!
Yes, good call...
almost as scary as the New Kids On The Block when they squeak "We're Rough!" during their Gangsta Rap classic "Hangin' Tough".
No Fun/Violent Femmes 1st LP
EG: Femmes' Kiss Off:
'I take one one one cause you left me and
Two two two for my family and
3 3 3 for my heartache and
4 4 4 for my headaches and
5 5 5 for my lonely and
6 6 6 for my sorrow and
7 7 for no tomorrow and
8 8 I forget what 8 was for and
9 9 9 for a lost god and
10 10 10 10 for everything everything everything everything
You can all just kiss off into the air
Behind my back I can see them stare
They'll hurt me bad but I won't mind
They'll hurt me bad they do it all the time'
It's even sung in a whiny voice! They might as well have released a song called No-one Fancies Me, It's So Unfair
Leslie Gore
It's My Party
It's the emotional petulance of the lyrics in the chorus that nails the fact that it's a teenager.
