Songs to play in an empty stadium

Gauntlet's picture

I'm nicking this idea from elsewhere on the internet, where someone is compiling a list of songs to be played on the sound system of an enormous and empty stadium while you lie in the centre of the pitch. Song requirements:

  • good bassline to make the blades of grass tremble around you
  • sweeping, grandiose atmosphere, to fill the stadium
  • the kind of song you feel in your ribcage

    Her list for far includes

    As well as:
    Sigur Ros - Hoppipolla
Bloc Party - This Is Modern Love
The Temper Trap - Sweet Disposition
Florence and The Machine - Cosmic Love
    Frou Frou - Let's Go

    But seriously though, folks...

How about "Visions Of You" by Jah Wobble's Invaders Of The Heart? Ooh! Even better - 'Public Image' by PIL.

Unquestionably, the masters of 'Empty Stadium Rock'

(and the Yamaha GX-1 he's playing is a HUGELY rare instrument. The most insane analogue performance synth ever designed - and it was branded as part of Yamaha's 'Electone' home organ line!)

In the antiquated filing system of my brain, I just reached for the little index card that came up first...

    La Grange..

by ZZ Top. Here, in their Pearly King/3 Amigos phase with synchronised rocking and Frank at the back who looks like a hitman on his hols. It says loud on the tin.

    Black Uhuru...

...Shine Eye Gal. The most bowel-churning bass ever. Oh, or Baby Satellite by Biosphere, for similar low-frequency reasons.
