Songs Of Joy

Songs which make you smile, cheer you up a bit, make you feel the world is a slightly better place after hearing them. Here are my 3 suggestions - a bit poppy, a bit mainstream but they work for me:

I Wish - Stevie Wonder
Mmm Bop - Hanson
Hot Love - T. Rex

Its obviously quite a personal thing (many may disagree with the Hanson selection I guess). Interested to hear other feelgood song suggestions...

This morning's wake me up tune....

"Lido Shuffle" by Boz Scaggs - put me in a very happy frame of mind before I left the house.

dodger23 | 14 March 2008 - 5:56pm

ELO

Mr Blue sky hits the spot every time.

Andymac | 14 March 2008 - 6:21pm

Johnny Bristol

"Hang On In There Baby". Could anything be more UP.

More Stevie

For Once In My Life. Makes my heart bound.

Fraser Lewry | 14 March 2008 - 7:19pm

Oh Boy!

by Buddy Holly.

Lucas Hare | 14 March 2008 - 7:44pm

Here's a few more...

Teenage Kicks - Undertones
Another Girl, Another Planet - The Only Ones
Walking on Sunshine - Katrina and the Waves (I know, I know)
Sweet Home Chicago - Luther Allison
Sweet Gene Vincent - Ian Dury
Angel - Aretha Franklin

Paul Waring | 14 March 2008 - 8:05pm

...whoa-oh-ohhh!

'Walking On Sunshine' will always make me think of Futurama, and as such it will always have a place in my heart. Embrace it like the pop classic it is.

CrawtonLeek | 16 March 2008 - 6:53pm

Enjoy Yourself

by The Specials generally cheers me up.

Ghost Town also makes me smile but that's mainly because it reminds me of the church disco in 'Father Ted'.
"Please be upstanding for our national anthem......."

Tommy Grant | 14 March 2008 - 8:06pm

Yeah...

I love it too, and for that reason, but it's hardly irrespective of circumstance, is it?

(reminisces... first single I bought.... aaaahhh....)

spikeyboy | 15 March 2008 - 11:10am

The mood is good

I`ll give you five that make me smile.
Do you realize? by The Flaming Lips
Happiness by The Blue Nile
A Glorious Day by Embrace
Miss Chatelaine by KD Lang
Cupid by Sam Cooke
And just thinking about The Proclaimers does the trick too. In a good way mind.

gerry d | 14 March 2008 - 9:21pm

Do You Realiiiiiiiiiize???? (aaa-AAA-aaaaaaahhhhh)

Nice choice. That was the tune that my wife and I walked back down the ailse to after getting married. We wanted a tune that matched our slightly off-beat musical tastes, but which the more straight-laced members of the congregation (mostly her side - my folks are nutters) could listen to without rushing for the exits.

Much as we predicted, the lines about having a beautiful face caught the hearts of those present, whilst the lyrics about everybody you know (i.e. them) dying were miraculously unheard. These details conspired to make our already beaming faces that little bit smilier.

Furthermore, the count-in at the beginning meant that we were perfectly in step right from the off. Marvellous.

CrawtonLeek | 16 March 2008 - 6:48pm

The lips have got plenty

I can't help but concur with "Do you realise" and what a great choice of song for your wedding!

Would also add "Bad Days" from Clouds Taste Metallic and "Buggin" from Soft Bulletin as two cheery-uppers from the Lips

fist_of_onan | 16 March 2008 - 10:35pm

And furthermore...

'She Don't Use Jelly' is a killer tune for happy, smily singalongs. Perhaps the cheeriest delivery of the word 'vaseline' in recorded history.

And thanks. It was a great wedding.

CrawtonLeek | 17 March 2008 - 8:37am

Walking On Sunshine

Katrina and the Waves' finest moment.

bo_doogley | 14 March 2008 - 9:28pm

Fill Your Heart

'Fill Your Heart' - David Bowie

Such a happy song. Always makes me smile. Then goes straight into 'Andy Warhol'; completely the opposite.

TJ Dizzle | 14 March 2008 - 11:43pm

Recurring Dream...

...by Crowded House makes the world seem like a better place for 3 mins or so..

(Trying to work out if I can get to Cornbury this year as I write!)

Other choices...
Most things from Bruce Springsteen and the Seeger Sessions band Live In Dublin work incredibly well - there's just a sense of pure joy in playing music coming from the stage.

And admittedly somewhat bizarrely and maybe a very personal taste - a really good live version of Ideoteque by Radiohead.

Staughn | 14 March 2008 - 11:47pm

Dream

Spot on with Recurring Dream, the opening guitars just make my heart melt every time I hear it; must try listening to this classic on grey miserable Monday morning drives to work. I'm sure this song could produce rainbows in the sky on demand.

David Wright | 15 March 2008 - 9:33am

Jim Thomas | 15 March 2008 - 10:27am

I bet you know beef jerky has an after taste

something more recent, the sheer energy and spirit of this this lot always cheers me up , it also sung in pure nonsense which always helps, It has a tank division of riff and lot's of running about ie total pop. enjoy!

Chris G | 15 March 2008 - 10:53am

That put me in mind of this...

...which is of course brilliant

simonperrins | 15 March 2008 - 11:12am

There's a few...

HAYSEED Dixie's version of 'I Believe In A Thing Called Love' brings a smile to my face every time ("Banjo!")
KATRINA & The Waves ditty is a perennial uppper.
JOHN Denver's 'Eagle And The Hawk' always makes me feel more open to the world.

Oh, and then there's Ian Dury's 'F***ing Ada' - perfect for playing when you've had a rough day and just want to let it all out.

muttnjeff | 15 March 2008 - 2:09pm

Happy Happy Joy Joy

I don't know why, but Aphex Twin's 'Donkey Rhubarb' has me grinning like a simpleton every time. I think it's the steel drums.

DJ Format always sees me right for a smile - 'Ill Culinary Behaviour' is a song and title made for chuckles - and Hideki Naganuma's soundtrack to the old Dreamcast game Jet Set Radio is pure ear sugar, with added step-springage.

I'm a happy camper.

CrawtonLeek | 15 March 2008 - 2:29pm

Just for you, Mr. Leek

Liam Hatchet | 15 March 2008 - 2:45pm

Gawd bless you, sir!

The day I'm having, I really needed that.

CrawtonLeek | 15 March 2008 - 3:49pm

Three big smiles

...that work for me, anyway:

...the last of which should at least bring a smile to our editor.

Paul Vincent | 15 March 2008 - 6:20pm

Don't Judge...

...I just can't help it.

Except when he says 'What if I die here?'', which gives me a twinge of sadness. This songs the double whammy!

Liam Hatchet | 16 March 2008 - 11:49pm

Agree fully in respect of

Agree fully in respect of Yes by Lambert(!) and Butler and Hot Love by T Rex

I'd add in The Beatles 'Eight Days A Week', The Specials 'Gangsters', Madonna 'Cherish', and Teenage Fanclub 'Sparky's Dream'

Rockandrolldoggy | 16 March 2008 - 9:45pm

Nice and loud in a traffic jam...

There's ony one way of life and thats's your own, your own, your own......
The smarter the suit the better. never fails to lift. Thank you, Levellers.

Retropath2 | 17 March 2008 - 9:32am

"Up With People"

"Up With People" by Lambchop... the big gospel choir harmonies towards the end mever fail to get me going.

frankandthetwins | 17 March 2008 - 10:42am

Some fabulous ones

High Fashion Queen - Chris Hillman and Steve Earle from the Gram Parsons Tribute

You Really Got A Hold on Me - Smokey's original, the fab four's cover or the version Mr Costello does in concert combined with Deep Dark Truthful Mirror. Here's an alternative version with Smokey being seduced by the letter 'U'

Move it On Over - Hank Williams having a ball in the dog house

Let's Talk Dirty in Hawaiian - John Prine says 'Aloha' from a ukelele Honululu sunset.

My Guy - the Temptations sing Smokey

The very fabulous "Miss Grace" - The Thymes

The BeGoodTanyas - reminding us that 'The Littlest Birds' sing the prettiest songs.

The best song ever sung by the best singer and with the trombone solo providing the best ever moment in music.

Tony Bennett - with the lines 'Fill my heart with song and let me sing forevermore' in Fly Me To the Moon.

Andrew Moorhouse | 17 March 2008 - 12:58pm

Non stop ecstatic dancing

Some songs of joy;

Your Loving Arms - Billie Ray Martin
April Skies - Jesus, Mary & Joseph
Upside Down - Diana Ross and Chic
Sitting on the dock etc - Otis Redding

Otis would always work, but it gains an extra edge by bringing to mind the marvellous Reeves & Mortimer sketch. Shame I'm not a Barry White fan.

Oh, and Afternoon Delight a la Anchorman. "Wow! We sound good!"

Syd Hancock | 17 March 2008 - 4:05pm

James Brown

Get Up I Feel Like Being a Sex Machine

Wonderful, and never fails to bring a smile to my face

David | 17 March 2008 - 3:46pm

..you gave that to me

Zoom by Fat Larry`s Band (and all that sail in them) is my own personal Prozac (without side effects)

Simon Smith | 17 March 2008 - 9:40pm

Another vote for the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band...

... but this time it's for 'The Intro And The Outro'

rokketeer | 18 March 2008 - 10:01pm

bingham | 21 March 2008 - 5:19am

I'm yOUR OLD GRANDPA

bingham | 21 March 2008 - 5:22am

Seconded (JAMC - April Skies)

oh and definitely Stockholm Syndrome by Yo La Tengo, though i appreciate this might only work for me

badmick | 20 March 2008 - 4:05pm

Sweet Thing by Van Morrison

Sweet Thing by Van Morrison does it for me. It's the repetitions of "I will..." at the start of each line (I know, I think too much), makes it all incredibly positive.

Also "Le Freak" by Chic and pretty much any Otis Redding has a similar effect....

ganglesprocket | 20 March 2008 - 4:40pm

How do you like them onions

Green Onions by Booker T and the MG´s always makes me smile and speaking of smiles, I Love to See You Smile by Randy Newman. I read that Mr. Newman claimed that this song made him the most money as it was used in some toothpaste ad.
Super Freak by Rick James also makes me giggle.

On The Fence | 20 March 2008 - 7:28pm

make me smile

Illegal Smile-John Prine
Chirpee Chirpee Cheep Cheep Cheep-Middle of the Road
Wanker-Victoria Wood
Rebellious Jukebox-The Fall
The Vagina Song-Monty Phython
I'm only Sleepng-Beatles(Anthology)
and of coure "The Laughing Policeman"

bingham | 21 March 2008 - 5:18am

Wild Wild Life, Talking Heads....

....try feeling miserable while listening to it - impossible.
Oh, and "The Dry Cleaner from Des Moines" by Joni Mitchell

roylevy | 21 March 2008 - 11:46am

What if I've just lost my

What if I've just lost my legs to diabetic ulcers?

Liam Hatchet | 21 March 2008 - 7:50pm

Noisy 70's Funk - what's not to like?

Can't understand why this wasn't a global smash....

muttnjeff | 21 March 2008 - 1:10pm
