Can't post YouTube atm...
...but:
Julia by the HJH
Allison by Pixies
Also, all the songs on the album "Tweez" by Slint are people's names:
Ron
Nan Ding
Carol
Kent
Charlotte
Darlene
Pat
Warren
Rhoda
The names on Tweez
are the names of the members' parents plus the name of the drummer's dog (Rhoda).
Is that right? Cool.
Have an up for learning me summat.
I've always liked these:
Sharleena
Check out the guitar solo at 2:16
G - L - O - R - I - A
And - "Kimberly" too
More Mac
This is a pretty song as well
Lola......?
does this count as she turns out to be a fella....?
The mighty Orange Juice
Can't access youtube from here, but "Felicity"
Would have suggested this myself too
Martha
by Tom Waits
Ada - The National
Angelina - Bob Dylan
and the wonderful Jackie by Scott Walker
Jackie
is not about a girl. It's the singer singing about himself - the original being by Jacques Brel.
Are the Massive slipping? I've not been here much but this post has been here for 3 weeks without someone picking it up...
So many great ones to choose
These spring to mind immediately:
Nick Drake - Hazey Jane 1 and 2
Bob Seger - Rosalie, but preferably as covered by Thin Lizzy
Roy Harper - Elizabeth
Two from Randy Newman - Marie and Kathleen
Townes van Zandt - Kathleen
Siouxsie and the Banshees - Christine
It's not about a girl as such
but I'm claiming Grace by Jeff Buckley as the winner
Or there is Grace
By Supergrass
and a particular fave from Jake
Sort of obscure
How about the dramatic rush of 'Desiree' by The Left Banke?
Or the naive wonders of 'Jesamine' by The Casuals?
love "Jesamine"
- first came across it in Weller's version.
Will seek out Left Banke track. They wrote one my all time favourite songs which also features a girl's name "Walk Away Renee"
Pannonica
by Thelonious Monk, of course.
A tribute to his friend Pannonica de Koenigswarter, the "Jazz Baroness"
BBC Documentary
There was an excellent BBC documentary about "The Jazz Baroness" , part of the Storyville series. Interesting lady.
A couple of beauties
John Cale - Emily
is wonderful with its repeated melodic motif (which I reckon Eno nicked for Another Green World)
Dolly Parton - Jolene
Bernadette - The Four Tops
...and her sister Jeanette by The Beat.
Also, how about -
Therese - The Bodines
Hazel - The Cocteau Twins, as well as most of the Treasure album
Jacqueline - The Durutti Column
Charlotte Anne - Julian Cope
Grace - Lloyd Cole & Commotions
Coleen/Caroline - Martin Stephenson & Daintees
Tara - Roxy Music
Sylvie - Saint Etienne
Iona - Skids
Evangeline
by The Cocteau Twins as well.
And by Matthew Sweet
and, of course, by the mighty Band 'n' Emmylou
The Evangeline festival continues
with The Icicle Works
And from me
Sally G - Paul McCartney
Sisters of Mercy - Leonard Cohen
Roxanne - Police
Patricia the Stripper - Chris de Burgh
Lady Eleanor - Lindisfarne
Sister Ray - Velvet Underground
just hear those guitars sing!
(or the Allmans' 'Melissa' )
good call, also Phil Lynott
and Rosalie - Thin Lizzy via Bob Seeger
How's about a little Buddy.
and a bit of Little Richard.
Buddy's two for the price of one
The song was originally called "Cindy Lou", and was named for Buddy's niece, the daughter of his sister Pat Holley Kaiter. The title was later changed to "Peggy Sue" in reference to Crickets drummer Jerry Allison's girlfriend (and future wife), Peggy Sue Gerron, with whom he had recently had a temporary breakup.[1]Wikipedia
Rebecca...
....by Flo & Eddie...& therefore Elenore as well...
Bruce:
Sherry Darling, Rosalita, Janey Don't You Lose Heart, Sandy (4th July Asbury Park),
Work With Me Annie (Hank Ballard?)
Mona - Bo Diddley
Or Mona - Quicksilver Messenger Service.
Mary Jane
The Nines
Name-only songs, guys!
Anything else in the title disqualifies it, or else we'll be here forever...
Does 'Whoever' count?
cos that would mean
Shirley,Julie,Jane, Cathy,Jennifer, Alison, Phillipa, Sue, Deborah, Annabel, too
How about this bit
from Family Guy
Flipping ace
Cath...
Mathilde...
You can have her in English...
...or in the original French...
Either way, she's quite a girl.
Ray Lamontagne
Where do I collect my prize?
The answer, of course, is Amelia by Joni Mitchell.
more Elvis Costello
That reminds me
I'd completely forgotten about this:
Sultans Of Ping FC - Veronica (not a cover of the above).
Dolly Parton
Jolene - fabulous song
Valerie
Valleri
Another Kathleen
Josh Ritter
jeane
by the Smiths
Jean...
...and Dinah
Monica
The Members - Sally: Jam -
The Members - Sally:
Jam - Liza Radley
Dr Feelgood - Roxette:
One of my earliest TOTP memories
Is Barry Ryan doing this. I remember thinking, 'I want to look like him when I'm older'. Sadly, I ended up more resembling Barry Bucknell. Ryan was briefly married to Her Highness Tunku (Princess) Miriam binti al-Marhum Sultan Sir Ibrahim, fact fans.
Wendy
Did the sound engineers on the Ed Sullivan Show operate a system whereby prominence in the mix is determined by audience screams? The girls only had eyes for Denny.
Townes van Zandt
Kathleen
Clementine
A rich seam
Denise
As covered by Blondie (with a gender change)
Geraldine
Two From Me -
With the bonus of Linda Carter pictures and just a great song.
I haven't heard this for years but it was one of the first to pop into my head
apart from Amelia, it was the first one that popped into mine
funny that.
A few more:
Marlene - Todd Rundgren
Alice - Mott The Hoople
Angela - Bob James (theme from 'Taxi')
Caroline - Status Quo
Laura - Scissor Sisters
Alethea - Robin Trower
Jane - Jefferson Starship
and
Fairly obscure
but wonderful none the less, Jim Capaldi's Eve. It also features Paul Kossoff on guitar.
I'm also fond of Patty Griffin's Christina. Originally on Flaming Red this is a live version.
However AFAIK it has nothing to do with Christina Onassis.
they do say
this was Garcia's favourite Dylan song
Great thread by the way!
Guinevere - Crosby, Stills & Nash
Marcella - Beach Boys
Gaye - Clifford T ward
Two more:
Caroline:
...and Desiree
An up
For 'O Caroline', Fitter S. One of my favourite songs, ever
Maybelline - Chuck Berry
Two of my favourite songs...
Joanne by Michael Nesmith
and Carol by Chuck or the Stones
The Fountains Of Wayne
It's always a sign of a good powerpop album - a song that is just a girl's name.
The Fountains Of Wayne - Maureen :
The Fountains Of Wayne - Denise :
Tracie
Level 42
a couple more
Bo Diddley - Mona
(this version is with Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers)
Ben Vaughn - Darlene
Ann - David Gates
I bought the album simply because it had a track called Ann on it.
I was in love with a girl called Ann. Now if only I'd dared ask her out.
one more
Roy Orbison - Claudette
Ben Folds
More than his fair share:
Alice Childress
Emaline
Gracie
Jane
Julianne
Kate
Not to mention:
Annie Waits
Carrying Cathy
Give Judy My Notice

It starts at 3.50, but I would advise against it :)

Frank Zappa - "Deseri"
Ariel
"I said 'Hi'; she said 'Yeah I guess I am' "
The wonderful Dean Friedman
"She got turned-up nose... she got everything"
Mr Bowie has just met a girl called Blue Jean. Here, he describes the circumstances of their initial meeting and expresses an urgent desire to further their acquaintanceship.
PiL Annalisa
Once again, fellow Massivers,
there hasn't been enough jazz on this thread, has there?
So let's have John Coltrane's classic ballad, "Naima"
Francesca
Roy Harper

Not a big fan of Björk, but
I always loved the song Isobel.
Mary
Manic Street Preachers
have done Emily (so to speak).
Not sure anyone's posted this yet
A good intro as a set opener as well
Get's my vote
Used as opening gambit on first tape I made the future Mrs F many moons ago, and they obligingly opened with it at a rather damp Cropredy this year and suddenly all was well. Mind you an awful lot of other bands have penned homages to various Carolines over the years - but this one is still my favourite
My favourite as well but this runs it close
or this from Joni?
Amelia (after Ms Earhart) from the beautiful ruminative Hejira album of 1976. Her best LP?
Angie
Rolling Stones (Goats Head Soup, 1973)
(As if there was anyone here who didn't know that!)
carey,sarah,michelle
joni
bob
