Song of The Year - 2011
I never thought it would happen, with me & the girl from… Camberwell.
Her first album contained several songs which I found interesting & exciting up until she started to SHOUT!
And then I lost interest - but this, this is something I can really love, the way it starts so quietly and then builds - with pounding drums, droning organ, chants and percussion galore - to a climax before ending slowly (with a proper end, not a fade) with a 'Woo oo oo ooh' refrain, the singalong chorus 'Shake it out, shake it out', the fine advice of the lyric 'It's hard to dance with the Devil on your back, so shake him off, oh wo-oh' to the crazy lyric about burying horses in the ground, it's got it all! So much so that I'm calling it my 'Song of The Year'
If you care to join in I would love to hear yours.
Florence + The Machine 'Shake it Out'

& this is my second choice
Bon Iver - 'Holocene'
Not even Florence's best
I think that What the Water Gave Me is a masterpiece. Someone called it gothic-pop and everytime I listen to it I find something else that's moving and admirable. I can't remember the last time I heard so much drama in an ostensibly commercial single. I can't do the link thing but if someone wanted to share it , please enter here...
My song of the year, undoubtedly...
Video Games by Lana Del Rey.
Fantastic Track
My favourite too.
I say hats off to the chap/chapess who, a few weeks back, upon
being asked to name his albums of 2011 replied "ask me again in five years". Those lists just keep a changin'.
Still, doesn't mean we can't play. Today my favourite song of 2011 is this:
(Bill Wells & Aidan Moffat - The Copper Top)
That Florence + The Machine track sounds like...
T'Pau... Brrrr....
Plus a dollop of...
Enya...double brrr...
