Something to play my iPod on!
Posted by Native on 17 August 2011 - 4:03pm.
Was hoping for some good advice on buying a decent system to play my iPod on at home?
I have a Bose SoundDock which is decent enough but wanted something with a bit more sound quality.
I was about to spend big on a Bang and Olufsen BeoSound 8 when somebody told me the B&W Zeppelin has virtually the same sound quality for half the price.
So I suppose what I’m saying, has anybody got a BeoSound 8 or Zeppelin, and if so, any good?!

Go for the Zeppelin.
It sounds as good as one could expect from an iPod source and it looks good too. Have you considered connecting a dock to your amp or is portability an issue?
B&O
As a general principle, for any given B&O product, there's an alternative which costs half as much and performs at least as well if not twice as well...
Don't they have a showroom in Hampstead village
called I Saw You Coming?
This may be somewhat different from what
you have in mind but I've had a Sony CPF-IP001 for around 2 years now, and I've yet to hear anything better.
Sony no longer make them but you can still find them here and there, often at bargain prices, an example of which is here http://bit.ly/qWiO0s
Acres of bass via the sub woofer, and iPod dock and a line in for other devices. Listening to Planet Rock via my iPad on it as I type.
i recently got one of these.....

and can recommend it, especially at the price.
Pure
Maybe a different approach, but if you have an existing HiFi set up then the Pure i-20 is an excellent DAC dock ( unlike many other analogue docks ). Reasonable price too.

This must be a first..
Something from Bowers and Wilkins being described as the economic alternative..
Never knowingly underpriced
that Bowers & Wilkins.
For all that, I have a Zeppelin in the living room and it is a terrific unit. I've heard the Arcam rCube as well and it is a little more ungainly while having the advantage of having its own rechargeable battery, so it can be hoiked around the house as the mood might take you.
I have a set of Elac Micromagic 2.1 speakers (which probably falls somewhere between the Zeppelin and the B & O unit, pricewise - I got mine for less than EUR 1,000)hooked up in the kitchen to a Mac and Arcam DAC but these also work fantastically well with an iPod/iPhone via Bluetooth or phono leads. A real audio upgrade from a dock but they won't charge up your iPod.
Charge
Does the Zeppelin charge the iPod Neilo?
It does indeed
Native, I leave my iPod and iPhone on it all the time.
