Sod economics... here are some baby otters.

Patrick Crowther's picture

My god economics is such a depressing, life-sapping load of old cock. Baby otters, on the other hand, are wonderful.

*goes a bit gooey*

I love otters. One of the biggest little pleasures (oxymoron, but perhaps you get my drift) in my life is gazing at the otters in London zoo. They have a lovely enclosure, and seem quite content (yeah, like I can tell). When I'm reincarnated I want to come back as a sea otter, so I can float around like this:

Judging by my Chubby Checker progress

I have been.

They are ever so cute

I had always thought that they stayed close to the coast, but a few years ago when we were holidaying in Canada we went out whale watching. We were at least a couple of miles off the coast of Vancouver Island when our pilot slowed the boat down as we cruised past a family of sea otters, floating just like that, in what struck me as fairly choppy seas. I wouldn't have thought there would have been shellfish for them to feed on so far out and away from the rocky sea floor.

Had killer whales been in the vicinity, and there were plenty around although we didn't see any that day, I hate to think what might have happened. Having said that, as salmon were running and the killer whales were enjoying slap up breakfasts / dinners & teas, I guess the otters were able to feel reasonably relaxed about that danger.

Zoo

Do you know, I've not been to a zoo in years. At least 15, probably more. The kids in my life never really fancied it, or were taken by others.

I keep meaning to go to London Zoo, and just never get round to it (just walk past it on the canal route or on way to Primrose Hill). Your post has encouraged me to go very soon. Ta, Rosbif!

Don't go anytime soon

It gets super stinky at this time of year, plus it's school holidays so it'll be MOBBED.

Utterly fab off-peak though.

Problem solved

the next Word Massive mingle will be held at a new venue

By the penguins, London Zoo.

Meanwhile here's a pic of my dog as a puppy

When my daughter was about three, she 'wrote a song' called Otters for Sale.

Baby otters, on the other hand, are wonderful.

Unless you're a fish.

I wonder what Morrissey thinks about them?

Probably thinks they're worse than Anders Behring Breivik.

Anything for a quiet life.

I have a VHS recording of a BBC2 prog from a few years back: 'In The Trail of Tarka The Otter', a beautiful BBC Natural World programme. Lovely photography, subdued narration and background music, and the splendour of the English countryside. If I haven't been fishing for a while I put it on for a moment of repose.

so Fraser

What do baby otters taste like, and what is the best way to cook them?

I'll get my coat...

0
paulwright | 5 August 2011 - 4:39pm

Try the Tarka Dhal

It's like a normal dhal, but just a little otter.
Blimey, is that my cab?

skirky | 5 August 2011 - 5:43pm

1 baby otter

plus 1 baby otter equals 2 baby otters. Unless you're a merchant banker whereby 1 baby otter plus 1 baby otter equals 3 baby otters which are all his and which he will use to buy a baby otter farm which will give him 2000 baby otters and give you one back on your investment. This will lead to an otter excess and he will not be able to look after the otters so the government will pay him over the odds for his otters and put our taxes up. Leaving him stupidly rich, able to re-invest in voles and us with an excess of worthless otters. No, you're right, I don't understand economics either. I do love otters though, aaaaah.

Have some baby badgers!

I love badgers and these are some of the cubs at a sett I like to sit and watch at.

1
Ele | 10 August 2011 - 10:29pm

Wowser

I'm a friend of London Zoo and have seen many weird and wonderful animals there and all over the world. Yet I've never seen a badger in the flesh, alive or did, wild or in captivity. I envy you!

Never seen one, but have heard them.

They come out of hibernation in late March and hoot as the afternoon goes on. Very cute Alpine creatures.
