So...........any members of the Massive actually named after rock stars........?

Six Dog's picture

This really sort of follows on from the "parents record collection thread".

My Dad was a cool cat, a hipster, ran with the cool guys of Harlesden and spent nights in all the clubs you read about nowadays in the early years of the Stones, the Who etc..... The Bag O Nails, The Station Hotel in Richmond, the Oldfield Arms in Greenford, the Goldhawk, in, erm, Goldhawk Road.

So, as a cool cat, when young Six Dog came on the scene to a 21 year old Dad, a cool name had to be given to the sprog and LO! my middle name is Alexis. After yer man Alexis Korner. Now, as I've matured into the reasonably rounded 40 year old I am today, I see this as a "very cool thing" indeed. Subsequently seeking out more about Korner, sent me scurrying around the records of Pete Frame's family trees; Graham Bond, Robert Plant, Big Bill Broonzy actually stayed with him and Jagger and Richards. An archly knowing father proferring a cool name on his offspring - like the kid Lisa meets in one episode of The Simpsons who was called Thelonious - his one line was "the esoteric appeal makes up for the daily beatings"... BUT BUT BUT BUT BUT............

My secondary school years comprised 1981 - 1987. Anyone like to take a guess who was the most famous Alexis in the world at the time? Watched by over 20 million Brits every Sunday evening. Yep - you betcha, Alexis Carrington, as played by Joan Collins. I became synonymous with shoulder pads, bad acting, too much slap and loose morals. The ribbing I took then still scars me. I still can't seem to proudly and loudly speak of my middle name for fear of snickering and raised eyebrows. Only the company of those who can watch High Fidelity and can say "I know a guy like him" can I feel comfort and the warm glow of coolness!

So - are there any other Alexis's out there? Anyone hiding a Syd in the middle??

No but named my son...

Elliot Andrew George Martin (the latter being the surname).

Wham!

fan?

2
Helena Handcart | 19 January 2011 - 7:54pm

I recently discovered....

I was almost called "Rod".

( I was born in 1971 ).

Think it's fair to say I dodged a bullet.

doubleyoubee | 19 January 2011 - 3:52pm

I'd love to have been called Engelburt

But it came too late.

0
Five-Centres | 19 January 2011 - 3:53pm

No

I'm named after a footballer - John Toshack.

0
Spartacus Mills | 19 January 2011 - 4:05pm

Hippy Parents

I think I am named after my mother's father, but I may have got of lightly.

In my time I have worked with a Layla, a Joe (not Joesph) named after Hey Joe, and a Gram. Gram's mother told me that I was only the second person in 20 years to make the connection with Parsons.

0
Gatz | 19 January 2011 - 4:09pm

Twang Jr

Was nearly named Lowell. For about as long as it took Mrs T to veto the idea actually.

1
Twangothan | 19 January 2011 - 4:24pm

I managed to sneak

lloyd ( in honour of Mr. Cole ) in as my eldest chap's middle name.

0
doubleyoubee | 19 January 2011 - 4:28pm

I once worked with an Arwen.

Yes, named after Arwen Evenstar in Lord Of The Rings. Surprisingly well adjusted as well. Had I been called Bilbo or something I'd have coped poorly.

0
ganglesprocket | 19 January 2011 - 4:28pm

Arwen...

...sounds like a name, though, doesn't it?

Having only managed 3 sentences of Tolkien (and I begrudge those frankly) and never having seen the films, I'd have no idea, and suspect it was an Irish name.

I wanted the name Smokey (middle name obv) and was vetoed by the-then Mr Lean*

*I still haven't ruled out using it in future if Mr Crowther is reading this.

4
JoLean | 19 January 2011 - 4:33pm

Just to be clear...

... you want Patrick's babies? And you want one of them to have the middle name Smokey?

0
Glenbervie | 19 January 2011 - 9:47pm

"Smokey Crowther"

... will be playing a low down blues shuffle in a dirty dive, some time in the future...

man.of.soup | 20 January 2011 - 1:33pm

My daughter Kyllie

was NOT, repeat NOT, named after the antipodean poppette Ms Minogue (with one L), who would have been 13 when my sprog was born. It is based on an American name and she has put up with a lot of ribbing and misspelling over the last 30 years.

Different for my younger daughter, Belle Britney Beyonce Bjork la Beany of course.

6
Beany | 19 January 2011 - 4:38pm

I'm named after a vacuum cleaner

Does that count?

0
Neil Dyson | 19 January 2011 - 4:41pm

screen name

My screen name was certainly influenced by the American folk band Eddie from Ohio. Unlike the band members though, I am really from Ohio.

0
Curtis from Ohio | 19 January 2011 - 5:02pm

Your Real Name Is Hoover?

SUCKER!!

0
geacher53 | 19 January 2011 - 9:32pm

A friend of mine has a Thurston

which is frankly ludicrous.

0
Five-Centres | 19 January 2011 - 4:44pm

Don't just stand there

Get him a drink.

17
Spartacus Mills | 19 January 2011 - 4:54pm

My son..

..is called Thomas Lee, though not in homage to the legendary crumpeteer / drummer / inexpert anger manager from Motley Crue. I'm discouraging anyone from referring to him as 'Tommy'.

0
Prestonia | 19 January 2011 - 4:54pm

William Joseph

My eldest is named after much loved and missed Grandfathers, but he likes to think he's named after Messrs Hanna & Barbera, creators of Tom & Jerry, Wacky Races etc. My youngest is John Paul but that was just a fantastic coincidence as we got him 'ready made' and named. I suppose I should call him HJH for short.

1
Mike Todd | 19 January 2011 - 4:57pm

I once went out with Robert Smith

Not that one though

0
lovelyian | 19 January 2011 - 4:59pm

the other, other one

My firm's manager is named Robert Smyth. Not a Cure fan.

0
Curtis from Ohio | 19 January 2011 - 5:05pm

My middle name is Paul

And yes it is after Sir Paul of Peasmarsh! Although I only found out abut 5 years ago (long story)

0
Mondo | 19 January 2011 - 5:11pm

Geddy Crowther...

is at the moment just a figment of my imagination, but find the right gal and he could be stompin' those baby Taurus pedals before too long!

2
Patrick Crowther | 19 January 2011 - 5:37pm

Here's to the arrival of

Here's to the arrival of young Geddy Alexander Neil John By-Tor Lamneth Cygnus Xanadu Strangiato Crowther one of these days!

2
Trevor_Raggatt | 19 January 2011 - 5:56pm

I like it...

Thanks for saving me the trouble!

0
Patrick Crowther | 19 January 2011 - 7:22pm

Something missing

It needs a Smokey in the middle of it, or the future Mrs Crowther will have a hissy.

2
el toro calvo grande | 20 January 2011 - 12:58pm

All that advice we gave you about kids 'n' gurls 'n' that?

And this is how you repay us.

2
Paul Waring | 19 January 2011 - 6:20pm

Paging JoLean...

We have a Mr Crowther in reception for you.

Norweigan Blue has posted a pic you may want to see...

0
ganglesprocket | 19 January 2011 - 5:39pm

I was in a band

with Graham Norton.

Not that one, obviously. He wasn't named after the camp, "I have sacrificed my dignity for celebrity and now I want your dignity so I can maintain my popularity" chat show host/whatever he is.

He's now in a a Kings Of Leon tribute band. He doesn't like Kings Of Leon.

Poor Graham.

0
Buxton | 19 January 2011 - 5:48pm

I have worked on a psychiatric ward

With Elizabeth Taylor, Jane Russell and King George VI.

Two of them were really called that (they were staff), can you guess which one had another name?

1
Neil Dyson | 19 January 2011 - 5:54pm

That would obviously be

Elizabeth.

0
el toro calvo grande | 19 January 2011 - 6:20pm

Oh how I laugh.

Many's the time I've been Carl Perkins.

1
Carl Parker | 19 January 2011 - 7:27pm

It's hilarious

When I'm called Neil Diamond.

1
Neil Dyson | 19 January 2011 - 9:38pm

Templar?

My Dad named me after Roger Moore, from his favourite TV show...

But I grew up watching Ian Ogilvy...

0
Big Si | 19 January 2011 - 7:33pm

Random Name

No cultural connection, not even a family connection as far as I know.

My mates called Nick - apparently his dad thought of it whilst shaving

Rigid Digit | 19 January 2011 - 7:51pm

A comedy name

is what my dear parents bestowed upon me.

My son, however, is Joe (not Joseph) after the dear, departed Strummer of that ilk.

0
LuxExterior | 19 January 2011 - 8:22pm

Honest, not me

but a friend of mine has a little lad with the middle names Dylan and Ryland.

0
Beezer | 19 January 2011 - 8:45pm

My kid.

My youngest kid's middle name is John... after Peel, Martyn, Cash and Mellor (aka Strummer).
My wife still thinks I chose it in honour of her brother. I guess I'll have to tell her one day.

0
McLongWhiteCloud | 19 January 2011 - 9:10pm

My 4 year old daughter is called Joni....

.....after Ms Mitchell.

2
Almost Simon | 19 January 2011 - 9:50pm

I had two girls

butI always had a name sorted for a boy - Nils after Nils Lofgren. This goes back to the late seventies and you know what I'd be honored as Nils Lofgren is a brilliant guitarist, songwriter, singer and all round decent chap.

0
Lunaman | 19 January 2011 - 10:01pm

DIY

You could have tried something like Nilsisha! ;)

1
Carl Parker | 19 January 2011 - 11:10pm

0

0
Junior Wells | 19 January 2011 - 11:34pm

0
QueenslandLawyer | 19 January 2011 - 11:53pm

Our dog

is named Dino. After the 246 GT

0
Kjell | 22 January 2011 - 12:37am

My son is named Frank

after Mr Z.

I know a Ry and a couple of Dylans. And a dog called Django.

0
Mousey | 20 January 2011 - 12:00am

My name is Dion

. . but, ludicrously, not after Mr DiMucci. And not after Mr Dublin either. Nor Mrs Warwick.

Have any other members of the Massive got parents who are completely oblivious to music and / or football?

0
Dion Ashton | 20 January 2011 - 7:33am

My cat

is called Rufus, after Mr Wainwright.

0
el toro calvo grande | 20 January 2011 - 1:00pm

My name is Martin

after my father's acoustic guitar. I was slightly shocked when he revealed this information me when I was 19. It could have been worse, I suppose - he also had an Eko.

0
Wardour | 20 January 2011 - 5:07pm

Or Ovation

0
Beezer | 20 January 2011 - 5:13pm

News Justin

On the database at my previous work one of the students had the name Justin Hayward Smith. When I asked him where his name was from he said it was from some musician his parents liked.
I also worked with a James Brown
