So the Stone Roses have finally done it.

Bob's picture

Getting back together for a tour, it seems.

If nothing else, it'll be nice to see Reni showing almost every drummer in the universe how it's done, all over again. He's about the only bit of that band I really love, if I'm honest.

So it's all speculation

Of course it could be for the launch of the album the world has waited for: Cilla - The Duets.

Cilla sings with all her great contemporaries from the 60s; Englebert; Jones; The Bachelors; Lulu; Clodagh Rogers; Ken Dodd; Val Doonican & more.

I'd love

her to do a duet with Barry Scott.

Cilla Bang!

Reni's a virtuoso

..but you've got to love John Squire - Fools Gold makes him the most inventive guitarist of his generation if you ask me, which I realise nobody is.

1
Prestonia | 14 October 2011 - 7:56pm

He's a great player.

But he's just a bit of "player's player", for me. Wanks about too much by half for my liking. Agreed on Fool's Gold, mind.

Ian Brown is turning into Leonard Nimoy...

How illogical.

1
Zanti Misfit | 14 October 2011 - 8:00pm

Oh

fuck, no...

5
Pax Romana | 14 October 2011 - 8:04pm

they never got better than the classic line up in my opinion.

Mani, Brown, Ibrahim, Blonde Lady Dancer

2
sandamiano | 14 October 2011 - 8:12pm

Even

an announcement in the days before that "The band is taking time out to regroup" would have been a more significant artistic contribution than that performance.

0
Ahh_Bisto | 15 October 2011 - 10:28am

I was there...

... but not for long.

0
Tippy Wooder | 16 October 2011 - 6:25pm

I'm not looking to start trouble

but I just don't get these "OMG! Reni is such an amazing drummer!" claims. He's alright, he could hold a decent groove, but no more so than any decent drummer, IMHO.

What exactly am I missing?

0
Cadabra | 14 October 2011 - 8:34pm

For me, it's the tight/loose thing.

Metronomically tight, but with such swing. And those little grace notes, just tossed off in a way that would sound like showing off from anyone else, but with him just fit into it all. Instinctive, dazzling stuff.

3
Bob | 14 October 2011 - 8:40pm

Oh lord, oh Jesus yes!!!

That is all I have to say. I'll be there cos I DON'T CARE about what anyone else says. This is the
bloody Stone Roses we're talking about....
Is Reni actually gonna do it too?

0
Vorgongod | 14 October 2011 - 9:14pm

He's got a lovely swing to his groove

certainly, but what he's playing is fairly standard loose funk stuff. And I don't hear anything outstanding on the Roses' debut album either. I mean to say he's good, but is he really "showing every drummer in the universe how it's done" good? Let's face it, he's no Bernard Purdie...

Now *that's* how you do ghost notes ;-)

2
Cadabra | 15 October 2011 - 12:13am

Bit less China cymbal though please Bernard

China cymbals are like Tabasco; a lovely extra but easy to overdo and positively unpleasant when used to excess.

Patrick Crowther | 14 October 2011 - 10:04pm

Rum all over iPhone.

Really. Goddamn, you, Crowther, that *really* made me laugh!

0
Bob | 14 October 2011 - 10:06pm

Hmmm...

6
Patrick Crowther | 14 October 2011 - 10:22pm

I'm surrounded by

contemporaries and younger people who insist this is the greatest band, with the greatest debut ever.
(Excuse what may be seen as elitism herein)
As the only person i know, bar two, who saw them in 1989 (Edinburgh Venue, May) and as a man unlucky enough to have been to Spike Island, i have no desire to see these.
The first time i saw them they were great, the guy couldn't sing but everything else worked well (the trousers were still reasonable).
The second time was like a Nuremburg Rally for the E generation, with poorer planning and an inferior sound system.
I thought One Love was shite and refuse to even acknowledge they made another album.
The inteligence and all those subtle refreences to art, situationism et al have been airbrushed out of history. They are now the ultimate lad band, a foundation stone of the pantheon of indie anthem. The founders of a legacy that runs to Oasis through Kasabian to whatever stadium filling macho retrocentric dreck comes next.
It's not their fault, i know. But i've almost learned to dislike them.
(You will now tell me it's all about the music, man)
OOAA!

drilltime | 14 October 2011 - 11:00pm

The Venue Edinburgh

I was at that one. Nicotine soaked condensation dripping on the crowd

0
Ralph | 16 October 2011 - 6:24pm

I think it could be good.

Reni and Mountfield doing sinuous things again.. Great. JS letting loose over the top? Even better. The man's an awesome player. One of the last proper guiter heroes.

Ian Brown's vocals can, at last, be run through Melodyne to save the ears of the audience. Actually, why don't they give him a dummy mike and have someone in the wings doing the proper singing? At the end of the day, he's really just a Bez.

0
Lenny Law | 15 October 2011 - 12:57am

As Reni puts it:

"Not before 9T will I wear the hat 4 the Roses again"

"4 the Roses" refers to the Joni Mitchell album, obviously, but the rest is opaque to me. Help?

0
Burt Kocain | 15 October 2011 - 1:59am

Is it...

"I am not yet ninety years of age. When/if I am, I plan to join the reformed Stone Roses on a concert tour, during which I shall play (i) drums (ii) to the gallery by donning a distinctive titfer. God speed."

1
Auntie Beryl | 15 October 2011 - 9:38am

Thing is

has Reni picked up sticks in years?

Mani has been doing marvellous things with ver Scream
Squire doing bits n bobs
Brown making what he can from his limited voice

And lest us forget what Squire said 2 years ago

0
DogFacedBoy | 15 October 2011 - 9:55am

It's no

oil on canvas.

Needs more dolphins.

0
Ahh_Bisto | 15 October 2011 - 10:32am

Ah yes but

he wrote that out of his box.

0
Beezer | 17 October 2011 - 1:19pm

Not

out of nhis paintbox by the look of it. And his mum will kill him for using all the toothpaste

0
DogFacedBoy | 17 October 2011 - 1:22pm
James Blast | 17 October 2011 - 1:10pm

Come on, then ...

"... and there will be a third album which would be their first release since the ‘Second Coming’"

Hmm. I wonder what they'll call it?

0
Burt Kocain | 17 October 2011 - 1:27pm

How about

Third Time Lucky?
Looks like a Third, Smells Like a Third
Thirdy Cash?
Three At Last?
Nudge, nudge, wink, wink, eh, Squire?
Brown Trouser Time?
Pissing Into The skull of a Baggy corpse?
Will This Do?
I sing as well as Caruso?
Songs not good enough for even a Healers album?
Making sure brown stains?

0
DogFacedBoy | 17 October 2011 - 1:35pm

Stone Roses

They never seemed to make any money out of it, except Squire, so it'll be nice for them to get a big payday. No interest in going myself mind.

Apparently, they're going to do some big shows next summer, before heading into the studio. New album expected in 2018.
