Entertainment For Lively Minds
...so, Pet Shop Boys (again)

Snapping at the heels of THAT horrendous cover a couple of months ago:
...suddenly "Rent" is supposed to be one of THE all-time (top 20) love songs EVER, is it?
Unless someone's at the kid-on* - utterly LUDICROUS stuff.
If not, Enough of the gratuitous PSB sycophancy (clearly evidenced every other issue) - thank you.
JL
*I presume that Wham / "I'm Your Man" clearly IS a wind-up, right?

I saw PSB recently
at Latitude for the first time and after years of being agnostic about them and was really impressed they really put on a show and apart frrm a slight lull in the middle the show was great.
So if not PSB what you would you have put in the list?
thought you were
...Chris L for a sec
Remember when they were dissed for not being able to "do live"?
...don't get me wrong, pal. I do have a soft spot for the PSBs.
But they don't half get hyperboled here.
Their fair share of covers in 6 years, generous features per each new LP plus significant (always gushing) mentions every other issue seems (to these ears anyway) rather inversely proportionate to their genuinely worthy material.
Easier to say who would I NOT have put on the list.
But to include PSB and Wham with nothing from Otis Redding, Roberta Flack or Nina Simone (for absolute starters) is insane.
Wham/PSB
I cant think of much better British pop music of the 80s than these two; maybe plus SAW.
So...
You don't like the Pet Shop Boys or Wham. Fair enough, nothing to be ashamed of.
Nonsense
...where did I say that?
Not my point, chum - read the post again.
So...
You do like them?
The man makes a good point.
We all know why they get so much space in Word.
Do they, though?
I may be wrong, but I think it's two covers/features in 79 issues. That doesn't sound to OTT to me, especially for one of the UK's biggest bands. Has there been a lot of coverage apart from this? (And I don't mean throwaway mentions in features like Best/Worst).
"We all know why..."
And the reason is ...?
Look at the history...
From whence did the PSBs spring?
Now I understand. (Presuming you mean Smash Hits etc)
Although I'm not at all convinced I agree. Seems to me they are relatively important in this particular section of UK culture from within the last 20 years, which I hope is far more to do with it.
'So much space'
comparative to their worth.
I'd also like to add
that 'My Heart Will Go On' is one of the greatest songs, in any category, ever.
Not sure what was wrong with "THAT" cover?
The attendant interview with PSBs was one of the best pieces in the magazine in recent times. They, like Morrissey, give excellent copy. Neil Tennant is one of the most interesting pop theoreticians as well - so more input from / about PSBs for me please. And why not give them attention; their last two albums have been superb pop and made a decent dent in the charts. Love etc is my single of the year so far. And yes Rent is a beautiful and unusual love song.
Yes, but they don't have beards and guitars
so obviously don't qualify as Proper Musicians.
Rent
Unusually, I agreed with almost all of the songs and their inclusions, particularly Rent which is Neil and Chris at their plaintive best. I know it's an oft-trotted cliche but no song better sums up the late eighties zeitgeist.
A matter of taste
But Rent is a fantastic song. If you spotify the version from "Concrete", in particular (I'm guessing it's on there), it's stunning.
Any Top x list is subjective. I'm not quite sure what you would have them do, unless it's conduct a statistically representative survey every month. And if you did that, it'd be bloody "Angels" at #1.
