So, anyone got the new issue yet? Facial hair free zone?

Retro Man's picture

My wish for a cover star: Edwyn Collins, his wife's just had a book published about his stroke and recovery - would be interesting.

David Byrne? PJ Harvey & John Parish? Teenage Fanclub releasing a new album soon...or how about something a bit more "noisy" please like Sonic Youth? Billy Childish and the Medway "scene"?

Am I way off the mark?

Not yet but looking forward to it

Edwyn Collins would be a great cover. An interview / article would be very welcome. I have his wife's book on my bedside table ready to read once I have finshed Paul Du Noyer's latest. I heard a rumour that they are planning to re-release the Orange Juice back cat. I only have a compilation and cannot track down any of the albums.

Graham Day

If you're going to feature the Medway scene then get Graham Day. Please. One of the great unsung talents, nearly 30 years of great music and hardly a sniff of a hit. Abso-bloody-lutely marvellous singer, songwriter, musician. Every home should own at least one of his albums, by The Prisoners, or The Solarflares, Or Graham Day & The Gaolers, or The Prime Movers.

Go on, go mad with the cover!

Too right!

The Graham Day & The Gaolers albums are especially great considering they are his latest work - the sheer power of the production too! Great songwriter indeed...

Check out The Len Price 3 if you haven't already, Little Steven's signed them up to his Wicked Cool Record company.

Production

Yeah, the latest albums burst out of the speakers; I can't quite believe how good they sound. Records made by somebody nearly 30 years into a career aren't supposed to sound that good are they?

The Len Price 3, I've heard good things about: I'll look out for em.

Never

Really seen the Medway Scene covered and agree it would make for fascinating reading. Would also recommend the Len Price 3.

Lordy............

Now THERE was a band...

funny how the girls you fall in love with never fancy me,
funny how the ones you don't do...

Uncle Monty | 4 August 2009 - 3:22pm

Good news for you Airhead fans...

"The band reunited at Sam's wedding over the summer and a version of Funny how is now on YouTube and also on the Discography page. One not to be missed! (8/10/08)"

I've never even heard of the Medway scene?

What does it involve? The Chatham-ooga Choo Choo? Are there bands from Rock-chester?

I'll, er...

0
Five-Centres | 4 August 2009 - 4:03pm

Iggy and the Strood-ges

were possibly involved.

I can sense a Paddy McAloon cover in the air

now that he has the requisite facial hair and new product to push.

Facial hair aplenty

I think its fair to say. Latest picture I have seen of him (in the new issue of Uncut) suggests he hasn't seen a razor since Andromeda Heights days.

Agree that a feature on Paddy would be more than worthwhile. Maybe we can have it next month after a full blown Edwyn feature this month (and don't forget the Fannies as well)

Medway feature

That indeed could prove to be an interesting read. Billy, Childish, Graham Day, Len Price and the rather charming Pete Molinari.
Please Mr Ellen, sir? Can we? Can we?

Just the facts, ma'am

Checking our Charlie & Lola calendar I reckon the next issue (facial furniure or not) is due out next week. Subscribers (among whom I stand proudly) will get their's this Saturday or next Monday, out in the shops Weds/Thurs. I think Word is published on the second Thursday of each month, with subscriber copies arriving a few days earlier.

It also says 13th Aug in this month's issue....

Can we expect a review of the Beatles remasters in this issue? Having coughed up £300 I'm dreading the shoulder shrugging reivews.

ooof...

you went for the stereo and mono sets, did you? Cancel the stereos and buy those albums individually as you wish...the Monos you'll need to order in advance alright.

I'm sorry, I got all giddy

I'm sorry, I got all giddy and preordered both from Amazon. As my birthday is a few days before the release I've asked for nothing but Amazon vouchers to lessen the final impact on the credit card.

I picked up the Stereo's for the thick end of £130, it still works out less than individual purchases (and I do want them all) and I'd prefer the individual documentaries (all three - count 'em - minutes) on a separate DVD, something you don't get on the individual purchases.

Money and sense were but passing ships in the night when it came to making this decision.

Where are they

selling them for £130 - seems like £160 everywhere at present?

0
Molesworth | 5 August 2009 - 11:18pm

I'm going to get them...

from Amazon in the US where they'll work out much cheaper for me (I'm in Ireland), unless EMI have found a way of stopping me from buying from America!

humphreym | 5 August 2009 - 11:29pm

nice one...

if you find that one of the sleeves features 'ver Fabs wearing butchers outfits and chucking bits of meat about the place, you'll let us know, won't you?!

0
ivan | 6 August 2009 - 9:40am

Just ordered...

the Mono box set and got it for 171 euro, a saving of 33 euro if I had gone for UK store! As for the butchers cover, I was in a record shop last summer and the owner showed me the copy that he had. It was the original and one of the rare ones, so he was asking a huge price for it! Somewhere in the thousands!
