Small they were (but perfectly formed)

I went to see Chris Isaak in concert in 2007. An excellent performance in every way. However there was a point when Chris jumped off stage and did a bit of mingling with his audience. I was surprised to note that he was no more than 5' 10" at the absolute most when his website and just about every profile describe him as 6' 1". Now I can understand an odd inch or so but adding an extra three inches seems to be pushing it a bit. I wonder if anyone else has met a star close up and discovered that they have been exaggerating their physical attributes or, indeed, disguising their shortcomings, as it were. There is arguably too much of this sort of thing!

Boy inches

My daughters are both fairly tall and have commented on the apparently generous heights claimed by boys, leading to the concept of 'boy inches' which are no doubt applied elsewhere too.

I met Keith Richards...

after an X-Pensive Winos show in 1992, and he is quite small in stature. However he is the only famous person I've met who had an almost tangible presence about him.

Patrick Crowther | 16 September 2008 - 9:22pm

"Tangible presence"

Is that posh talk for "fug of old booze"?

Archie Valparaiso | 17 September 2008 - 7:07am

Heh heh...

very funny! No, seriously... he had an 'aura' about him that I've never felt before or since when meeting other famous people. It sounds daft, but it was very noticeable. I met lots of 'stars' when I worked in radio, but none of them had this quality that I've tried to describe in relation to Keef.

Patrick Crowther | 17 September 2008 - 7:48am

Interesting

I always assumed it might be something we project onto people out of our awe, rather than something that's exuded by them, but it's not always there when you expect it and sometimes is when you don't. On different occasions, I've found myself in the same room as Bob Dylan, Michael Caine and Terry Wogan. Guess which of the three had the most of what you - jokes apart, quite reasonably - call "tangible presence"? A clue: he's never appeared in drag in a Brian De Palma flick and is yet to sing "Hava Nagilah" with Harry Dean Stanton.

Archie Valparaiso | 17 September 2008 - 8:19am

I'm not surprised by that...

I encountered Dylan when he was in Camden Town in 1993, and he did not have an 'aura' about him, at least not that I picked up on.

Now Wogan... there's a true 'star'.

Patrick Crowther | 17 September 2008 - 8:21am

Roger Moore

Met him when I was a kid (and he was recording The Saint) and he had it too, perhaps rather unexpectedly, but Bobby Charlton - far more a hero to me then - was just a nice-enough bloke with a combover.

Even some teachers have it, don't they? We had one - nicknamed "Batman" because of his snazzy moves with his gown - who never raised his voice and was less detention-happy than most, yet he could silence a rowdy corridor instantly just by emerging from the staff room.

Archie Valparaiso | 17 September 2008 - 8:28am

We had a teacher like that

Nicknamed Horace. Put the fear of God in you and occasionally drew blood with a thwack to the back of the head. * shivers *

Beany | 17 September 2008 - 9:34am

Diverging into school reminiscenses for a moment

We had a teacher with the same nickname and presence - are we talking Blackheath here?

Tony Fry | 19 September 2008 - 11:24am

Nope, Owdham

Although he was a southerner, judging from his accent. He was head of English in the Seventies and probably into the Eighties at my school (which was also Andy Kershaw's - said he, crossthreading wildly).

Archie Valparaiso | 19 September 2008 - 11:35am

Well *my* Horace

was a teacher in Farnworth, near Bolton. I left in 1971 so he could have been the subject of a transfer to Archies Academy s'pose. Favourite phrase = Tommy Troublemaker.

Beany | 19 September 2008 - 12:15pm

The screenwriter William Goldman was obsessed by this

In his autobiographical books "Adventures in the Screen Trade" and "Which Lie Did I Tell?" he mentions numerous accounts of meeting actors and being surprised by how short they all seemed to be.

Offhand the only encounter I can recall was his seeing Sylvester Stallone at a hotel swimming pool.

It was the one place Sly would have no chance of putting lifts in his shoes. Goldman made a point of following him barefoot around the deck. He gleefully reported back to us that Sly was at the most five foot seven.

He also said the only star he ever met that was tall was Clint Eastwood, who was well over six feet.

Cookieboy | 16 September 2008 - 10:23pm

Sly and I shared a Golf Changing Room

And I'd say in bare feet 5 foot seven is more than generous.

Springer Bell | 16 September 2008 - 10:47pm

We want more!

We want pictures!

"Adrian! Adrian! I'm in da rough and I can't feel my legs!"

Archie Valparaiso | 17 September 2008 - 7:10am

I have to say

and being totally honest we were actually in the shower room, (he had just come in with a four ball just behind us) and it was one of the most surreal moments of my life, towelling down beside Sly.

What was funny was about one week later I'm back there and this time one of the guys from Iron Maiden is there discussing their new lead singer. (Bruce Dickinson had left for awhile and was replaced by Blaze Bayley). Now that was an interesting conversation to listen into.

Springer Bell | 17 September 2008 - 10:21am

Coincidentally

While we're talking about physical attributes, I understand that Bruce Dickinson is quite long in the shower, if you know what I mean.

Fraser Lewry | 17 September 2008 - 11:12am

I tried not to look at Sly

If you know what I mean.

Springer Bell | 17 September 2008 - 4:23pm

ICE T

Saw him,of all places,on Brighton seafront. Bodycount (His Metal band) were doing a gig that night. Not a Big guy. He was about 5-7,5-8.Very chatty though, had time for everyone who recognised him. Whereas i once worked with De La Soul who very big gentlemen,so were RUN DMC and both groups were cool and friendly.

paul beard | 17 September 2008 - 3:50am

I have it on good authority

that top popster Martin Fry is 7' 8" tall.

Archie Valparaiso | 17 September 2008 - 7:12am

Opposite effect

Noticed the singer from Keane in WH smiths in Charing Cross recently. Amazed how large the feller is - I'd say he is about about 6'3" and built like the proverbial outhouse. So I didn't say how shit his band is to his face...

Jon | 17 September 2008 - 8:57am

By George!

Many years ago in the early 90's I was walking through Leicester Square late one evening and found myself walking a few feet behind 2 very big lads chatting animatedly.

I was paying no real attention until I became aware that one of them had a very recognisable speaking voice. Dressed incognito in a square shouldered Crombie coat, plain jeans and a pair of DM boots topped off by a crew cut was a monster of a geezer that was Boy George.

No doubt my happily drunk state has exaggerated my memory but I remember thinking to myself 'Christ, he's fucking enormous!' At least 6'3' and very broad all the way down. Not fat I hasten to add - just a really big lad.

Andy Barrons | 17 September 2008 - 2:40pm

Have met Damon Albarn on a couple of occasions...

and he's taller than you'd imagine, about 6 foot 2 or so...

jimmymack | 17 September 2008 - 4:03pm

Alan Bennett...

... is very tall in the flesh and well built. Over six feet easily. Jimmy Saville is, however, somewhat diminutive. I glimpsed him in Roundhay Park in Leeds a couple of summers back buying an ice cream and wearing only a pair of skimpy shorts. it was a warm day but even so...

Richard Raftery | 17 September 2008 - 7:54pm

Don't go on

I hear he is very fond of lawyers.

Springer Bell | 17 September 2008 - 8:20pm

These skimpy shorts?

I think I saw that girl

carrying the number of the next round on Sky Sports Boxing last weekend!

Springer Bell | 18 September 2008 - 6:59am

That is bloody terrifying...

I am scarred for life.

Patrick Crowther | 18 September 2008 - 9:48am

Bono 'Money can't buy me height'

Wasn't there something about him recently being on the beach but still wearing his mega platform boots? Global fame but still nursing a fragile ego eh?

Richard Raftery | 17 September 2008 - 8:51pm

Elvis Towers and Bulks

I remember meeting Elvis Costelloe and Cait O Riordan in a bar in Cork ( Ireland ) in 87 or 88 and I´d always thought of him as being quite small and slender ( maybe, it was the glasses and the skinny ties ) but he´s a biggish lad. Admittedly, I was only a wee sprig of a lad.

On The Fence | 18 September 2008 - 8:01am

Noel Gallagher

A while back, I went into Andy's Guitar Centre on Denmark Street (sadly now defunct, I believe) and saw Noel auditioning a vintage Fender. It's not a large shop, so he was only a few feet away and he's about the same height as me - 5' 8", and more slight than you would expect.

But what I do particularly remember is that he has a very large head for his frame. As does Mani, who I saw in a nightclub in Manchester a few years ago. Is it something in the water up there?

Hardly definitive, but entertaining: http://www.celebheights.com/

phonefreakhoney | 18 September 2008 - 9:17am

Lots of people in entertainment...

have large heads. Measurements have been taken, you know...

Patrick Crowther | 18 September 2008 - 9:50am

Well I never!

I could tell the same story almost word for word.

I was in what is now 'Tin Pan Alley Music' on Denmark St about 10 years ago. Just me and one other customer - Noel Gallagher. I was stood in front some black Les Paul's he seemed to like though I didn't move for him and he didn't ask me to. He was entirely in black in some kind of very heavy overcoat and seemed a bit distracted. He asked the guys behind the cash desk if he could use their phone, made a call lasting less than 10 seconds then sloped off.

He is quite diminutive with indeed a heed on him like a hairy balloon.

Andy's is still there. Or it was in July anyway.

Andy Barrons | 18 September 2008 - 2:32pm

Oh Good

... I'm pleased Andy's is still there. I read Charles Shaar Murray's obit for them in Guitarist about a year ago and I assumed that was it. Haven't been down there for a little while.

Maybe Noel was distracted because I'd just been in and shouted "Oh My God You've Got A Huge Head!". No, I didn't really ...

phonefreakhoney | 18 September 2008 - 2:54pm

Oh bollocks

I hadn't realised it's gone/going. I wander down Denmark St most times I'm in central London, the last time being about 6 weeks ago and I'm sure all the windows were still dusty but filled with knackered looking but priceless kit.

Oh well. It's not as if I could afford any of it

Andy Barrons | 18 September 2008 - 7:44pm

Bruce Springsteen

looks a tad on the verically challenged side to me. I cannot verify this having never seen him live but I think he claims to be about 5'10'' which seems optimistic.

Steerpike | 18 September 2008 - 11:21am

Mr.Isaak

Came up to the balcony and stood right next to me at that 2007 gig (with some bint from the crowd pawing him all the time he was singing) and i would have said he was not much smaller that my six foot two..but maybe i am mistaken.
Now when Patti Smith jumped off stage at the RFH in 2005 and also stood next to me (what is it with them, i pay them to perform ON stage, i don't want any super trooper attention!) she was a lot smaller than i thought! I guess her presence is big though.

Jonny Evans | 18 September 2008 - 11:35am

Chris Isaak

You are correct Jonny, I have met Mr. Isaak a few times and he is somewhere between six foot and six foot one.

Jen | 21 September 2008 - 6:47pm

Are you sure?

I am almost 6' in height and when he stood close to me whilst off stage he was definitely shorter - no more than 5' 10". Could these 6' 1" stories include his hair (add 2") and maybe some built up socks or something?

Richard Raftery | 21 September 2008 - 7:03pm

Grace Jones anyone?

I have heard that she is 5' 4" at the most - hardly the Harty-bashing, muscular Amazonian of legend. Has anyone had a 'stood next to her at the bus stop and...' type of moment with her?

Richard Raftery | 18 September 2008 - 6:44pm

John Power of Cast and Las fame...

...is tiny - well under 5' 6" I would vouchsafe.

Richard Raftery | 18 September 2008 - 6:53pm

Badly Drawn Boy

Badly Drawn Boy is about that as well.

The Proclaimers

I came across the Reid brothers a couple of years ago at Summer Sundae festival in Leicester, and was amazed at how tall they were - I had always thought they were short chaps from seeing them on TV.
