Slight pedantry + a musical reference + being over 30 = A good Word thread?

Uncle Wheaty's picture

Formulas seem to be the theme of the evening.

Am I right with mine?

0

Formulae, surely?

(To be slightly pedantic.)

How right you are

I stand corrected and will go and stand in the Dunce corner for the next five minutes.

At least you have confirmed the first part though!

My aim is true.

(A musical reference for the over 30s.)

Actually the -s or the -ae seem to be acceptable these days. I just thought -ae was more Word.
:-)

Now that

would be an even more esoteric T-shirt slogan:

"-ae is more Word."

...with the a and e joined together

in that way that I can't reproduce on this keyboard but always makes a word look frightfully intellectual

eh ee

Upper case Æ = hold down the left Alt key and type 0198 on the numeric pad.

Lower case æ is Alt key and 0230.

that's what ye call a ligature

a ligature occurs where two or more graphemes are joined as a single glyph

generally representing...

...a diphthong, if my first year linguistics hasn't entirely deserted me. ;)

0
Bob | 20 March 2010 - 4:53pm

which is very interesting as

I clearly remember seeing Glyph support Diphthong at the Electric Gardens, Glasgow sometime around 1973

Did you know...

that there is a village called Ae about 10 miles North East of Dumfries? It lies in the Forest of Ae and has the shortest place name in the British Isles. It is a brilliant place for forest walks as the Forestry Commission has set out various paths and educational stuff for the kids. Also, a first class destination for mountain biking in Scotland. Not far off the M74/A701.

over 30?

seems a little on the young side

1

Damn straight

Don't forget that debating the merits of downloading the whole of Dark Side of The Moon rather than individual tracks is a hoary subject only suited to those who were of legal age to vote when it was originally released.

Talking of formula music (sort of)

Fourmyula - Nature

Possibly the mellowest, loveliest pop song of them all.

Flip

that's do-do-do-do-do-do de-de-de-de-de-de na-na-na-na-na-na

bloody marvellous!

I thought the equation a little different:

BBC4 Documentary + reminiscing about the 1970s + anecdotes about the Massive's progeniture = a Hot Topic in waiting!
